Today brings a number of updates which I include in the 1984 forum rather than the India forum for the sake of the historical record.

Sikh riots: Delhi L-G Najeeb Jung agrees with AAP, gives consent for SIT probe

http://indianexpress.com/article/ci...-agrees-with-aap-gives-consent-for-sit-probe/

Lt Governor Najeeb Jung has given consent to AAP Government’s recommendation for a probe by a Special Investigation Team(SIT) into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots here, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday.

The Delhi Government last week had recommended to Jung to set up a SIT to probe the anti-Sikh riots within a time frame of one year.

“The Lt Governor has given his nod to it (SIT probe),” Kejriwal told reporters. The Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) leader earlier met Jung in the morning.

PWD Minister Manish Sisodia said besides reopening of FIRs, the SIT would also inquire into allegations of destruction of evidence by police.

He said under the SIT probe, all those cases which were closed or shown untraced would be re-opened, re-investigated and if the need arises fresh FIRs would be registered.

The decision to form the SIT to investigate the riots which left around 3,000 Sikhs dead following the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, was slammed by Delhi Congress.

DPCC Chief Arvinder Singh Lovely said the decision was aimed at wooing the Sikh community by AAP ahead of Lok Sabha polls.

The government had recommended to Jung to bring police officers from outside Delhi for conducting the inquiry.

Delhi Government’s decision to form SIT came against the backdrop of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi admitting that some of the partymen were probably involved in the violence.

Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar are facing allegations of involvement in riots after Indira Gandhi was gunned down on October 31, 1984.

L-G backs Kejriwal's demand to form a SIT on 1984 anti-Sikh riots

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/lg-backs...-sit-on-1984-antisikh-riots/451115-37-64.html

New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Monday backed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's demand to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The Delhi Cabinet on February 6 had announced that a SIT will probe the riots.

"The Delhi Cabinet has asked the Lieutenant Governor to form a SIT to look into the 1984 riots. Cases which were closed will be opened again and if required, will be filed afresh," Delhi minister Manish Sisodia had said. He also said that SIT members would be from outside Delhi.

Kejriwal had recently met Jung on SIT probe into the communal riots. The CM's move came after an interview by Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi who refused to apologise for the violence.

"First of all, I wasn't involved in the riots at all. It wasn't that I was a part of it," Rahul had told to a news channel.

Thousands of Sikh men and women were killed during the violence which broke out after the then prime minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her Sikh bodyguards on October 30, 1984.

Thirty years since the riots, only 28 people have been convicted in the case.
