The Rot Setting In Among Sikhs

Recent articles by persons like Soul_jyot ji, Kanwardeep Singh ji, etc show an alarming trend towards depravity among Sikhs which run counter to basic tenets of Sikhism as propounded by our Gurus.

Some of the areas of widespread concern are:

  • Illtreatment of women and female infanticide & foeticide.
  • Discrimination based on caste
  • Consumption of intoxitants
  • unethical business practices and cheating
  • Inability to work as a team
  • Flaunting of wealth and Power
  • Open and proud display of wrongdoing and daring anyone to anything about it
  • Gluttonous consumption of food and alcohol
  • Prone to use violence and abusive language on the slightest pretext.
This is just an illustration. These may not be peculiar only to the Sikhs but is certainly widespread among them and Sikhs being a visible community, it also gets highlighted.
And it becomes all the more serious as each and every of the above traits specifically negates the basic philosophy of our Gurus.

But why are we so afflicted and why is it growing?

It may be easy to dismiss it by saying that we are becomming materialistic. But why are we becomming so materialistic inspite of being Sikhs?

Is it because we are turning the concepts of Chardikalan, fearlessness, leadership, No superstition on their head and completely misinterpreting them to suit our selfish interests?

For instance Chardikalan is a spiritually blissful state of acceptance of Hukam. But it is being misinterpreted as a licence for enjoying worldly pleasures whatever may be the means!
And when it is said that we should be fearless leaders or Sardars it was meant that we should lead in speaking and fighting against wrong acts but we have taken it to mean that we must be always leaders and never ordinary team members even if we do not have the ability!

In my humble and very unintellectual view these are very serious issues for us to introspect.

On introspection, I quote what Narayanjot ji said in an earlier post some time back:
Starting with - What prevents us from introspection? I think more than ego prevents us from being introspective. For one thing, most of our social experiences discourage introspection -- it looks to much like day-dreaming, takes us into the realm of things that are not clear-cut, black and white, requires us to be patient with tones of gray, prevents us from coming to conclusions quickly, does not for most people lead to a big paycheck, seems as if we are not listening or paying attention to the needy voices around us, and more. For the sake of argument, let's say that introspection is a very antisocial activity. (Naturally I don't agree, we are just exploring for a moment). An antisocial activity that we are discouraged from pursuing. Then one day we discover that to make emotional progress and for our spritual health we should introspect. And what happens? Well we don't have a clue

  • Gluttonous consumption of food (especially Non veg) and alcohol

Why just pick on non-veg people?

The non-veg Sikhs I know are the most healthiest people I know.

What if I made a statement ........The most fattest and weediest Sikhs I know tend to be vege's. I could back it up with a picture of Sangat in a Vege Sant type Gurudwara. I also know many many boozers who are Vege's.

I am getting a little sick of non veg bashing.

Maybe these vege's are hankering for drumsticks?;)

Randip singh ji,

Amanji has said it in one sentence. The emphasis is on "Gluttonous consumption". In brackets "especially non veg" is said because the fact remains that Punjab has the highest consumption on non veg. We are equally gluttonous with veg stuff also. This is easily visible. And the results are for all to see. Obesity and heart ailments are common in Punjab. In fact Cardiac specialty hospitals like Escorts, Fortis etc have maximum clientele from Punjab and they have set up shops in Punjab where they are doing brisk business.

In consumption of alcohol too Punjab is far ahead of all the states and I will not be surprised if it equals or exceeds consumption of rest of India put together. Nothing to be proud of isn't it.

So there is no non veg bashing here, just facts.

IT all boils down to..Sikhs having turned their BACKS on GURBANI....i saw the ROT myself...i saw with my own eyes..Sikhs going to the nearby Hanuman mandir first thing in the morning, matha teking, gettign a TILAK..and then coming to Sis Ganj Gurdwara...
I saw a Granthi that forgot his KIRPAN...and when the time in the ardass came to "bhet Kirpan"...he suddenly realised it...and guess what...??? He took off his KARRA and passed it through the DEGH !!! According to him....any one of the Kakaars will do just fine (kacherra in degh ?? or Knagha in degh... Kesh in degh ??)..IN GURDWARA COMPOUNDS one cna see dried up tree trunks wrapped in RED CLOTH..people matha teking milk etc...In Delhi at a friends Sukhmani paath there was a photo of Guru nanak ji garlanded and a thali in front to colelct Goluck...people went there first before turnign to SGGS..Shudh GHEE being BURNED in jyots..instead of FEEDING the POOR...or in Guru Ka Langgar...MILK used to wash floors instead of putting in poor mouths...Gold being put on walls and ROOFS instead of used in EDUCATION of deserving Sikhs....ALL these are the ROT..and MORE..that leads to other rot mentioned....Pickpockets in Gurdwaras...thieves, rapists, child molestors, girl kidnappers,..what not..we have them all...in Punjab alone there must be over 25,000 Gurdwaras for 12,000 villages and 250 towns...GURDWARAS are BIG BUSINESS !!! the Granthis, Ragis, Parcharaks, Sants, babas, Gurdwara Managements are LIVING OFF GURDWARAS..BUT NOTHING...no parchaar.no SIKHIYA...NO EDUCATION..NO GURBANI BASED EDUCATION... is being PUT BACK TO SANGAT. Babas feel ashamed to WALK...when GURU NANAK WALKED !!......:down:

These aren't all the facts.

The problem is not the non veg consumption in Punjab, but Ghee, Full Fat Milk, Sugar etc. I mean, there is Paneer in absolutely everything.

  • Paneer
  • Dal Makhanee (staple diet of Punjab), Makhanee this, Makhanee that.
  • Ghee
  • Maakhan
  • Full fat Lassee

I just came back from there and this was pointed out to me by my Doctor friends in Punjab.

  • Clogged Veins etc caused by full fat milk and Ghee
  • Diabetes by overweight and too much sugar consumption.

He also noted that in the past people worked in fields and burned this off, they do not do that now.

Ironocally meat in Punjab is healthy.

In Punjab, we have a "Tandoor Oven", which is THE most healthiest way to cook meat. All the fat comes off.

The other problem Alcoholism is RIFE. I see people who are non veg and veg who consume vast quantities of liquor. This must be curbed.

One more thing I like to add is the growing menace of LACK OF WORK CULTURE among Sikhs . I myself am so concious to employ as much Punjabi workforce as possible , but it almost getting too difficult to get a Punjabi ( Sikh ) worker who is willing to put in labour honestly & diligently here in Punjab . Everybody wants just to know the salary figure then almost in 90% of cases they don't join next morning ( they NEVER join immediately cause they have some important work to do ) . Remember I'm giving wages that are the best in my trade . Result is that except for accounting & sales job almost all my staff is BHAIYAS who are really hardworking & honest .

I don't think we can say it lack of work culture. The same punjabi people are ready to work for 16 hours outside India, reason they get dollars. So we can say that That punjabi and other communities are willing to work only if they get salary they wanted .Unfortunately India is already so overpopulated and market is so much competetive that an umemployers can't give them high salary. So the same people loose interest in work

That's right dalbirk Ji,

I very much thought so. You have first hand experience. The Bhaiyas have taken over almost complete labour work in Punjab. Earlier the best artisans like carpenters, fitters, masons were Sikhs. No longer so.

These days they just live off by selling land which I believe is upto 3 crores an acre. They just do not know what to do with the money, so they go berserk buying up Mercs and indulge in all sorts of debaucheries and do no work. Or they live off the earnings of their NRI relatives or get into illegal activities but say no to honest labour.

Other than these there are 2 more very paying professions in Punjab, Theka (Liquor vend) and Dera.

A top functionary of DSGMC recently told me that a lot of money is being collected fraudently from the rich Sangat of big cities by scamsters in the name of Kar Seva of historic gurudwaras. This is then used to set up deras in Punjab by overnight Babas who use the miseries and plight of gullible Sikh women to mint money.

There are genuine Gurbani based Pracharaks but they can be counted on fingures of hand. But few people listen to them (maybe because they bluntly talk against miracles). Most people (especially women) believe in their personal Babas only because they dispense sweet blessing, charms etc.

Only Waheguru will find ways to get us out of this mess.
