Sikhism Through the Lens of Science:
A Personal Intellectual Journey

My engagement with Sikhism through the lens of science is not an intellectual accident. It is the natural outcome of my journey as a physicist, teacher, researcher, and student of Sikh thought. I have never experienced science and Sikhism as two mutually exclusive worlds. Rather, I have gradually come to see them as two different but potentially complementary ways of engaging with the profound questions of existence, reality, knowledge, and human responsibility.

My scientific training taught me to ask questions. Physics encouraged me not to accept an assertion merely because it had been repeated for generations. But to examine it, investigate its foundations, look for evidence, and remain willing to modify my understanding when new evidence emerged. This intellectual habit has profoundly influenced the way I approach Sikhism. When I read Gurbani, the teachings of Guru Nanak and the writings of the Sikh Gurus, I do not approach them simply as inherited religious formulations. I approach them with curiosity, questioning, reflection, and a desire to understand their deeper implications.

For me, this does not mean subjecting Gurbani to laboratory experimentation or attempting to prove Sikh doctrines through scientific instruments. Science has its own domain, methodology, and limitations. Sikh spirituality operates in another dimension of human experience. The purpose of bringing the two into conversation is therefore not to transform Sikhism into science, but to explore how Sikh wisdom can be meaningfully understood in an age shaped by scientific knowledge.

My journey as a physicist has also made me deeply conscious of the power and limitations of human knowledge. Science has transformed our understanding of matter, energy, space, time, life, and the universe. Yet every scientific discovery seems to open new questions. The more we understand about the cosmos, the more conscious we become of what remains unknown. This sense of intellectual humility resonates deeply with the Sikh conception of Wismad (wonder and awe) before the vastness and mystery of existence.

When I encounter the Sikh concept of Hukam, I find another interesting point of reflection. Science seeks to discover the regularities, relationships, and laws operating within nature. Sikh thought invites us to recognize that human beings are part of a much larger cosmic order rather than autonomous masters of existence. I do not equate Hukam with a scientific law; doing so would oversimplify the concept. Nevertheless, contemplating the orderliness and interconnectedness of nature through science has helped me appreciate why Sikh thought repeatedly calls upon human beings to recognize their place within a larger reality.

My scientific perspective has also influenced the way I understand Guru Nanak's emphasis on inquiry. Guru Nanak did not encourage passive acceptance of empty ritual or inherited assumptions. His teachings repeatedly challenge superficiality and invite human beings to move from external appearances toward deeper understanding. I find this intellectual openness remarkably compatible with the spirit of inquiry that characterizes scientific thinking.

At the same time, I have learned that science alone cannot answer every question that matters to human beings. Science can help explain how stars form, how cells function, how ecosystems change, or how artificial intelligence operates. But questions such as “What constitutes a meaningful life?”, “How should human beings treat one another?”, “What is our ethical responsibility toward nature?”, and “How should knowledge be used?” cannot be resolved by empirical measurement alone. These questions belong substantially to the domains of philosophy, ethics, spirituality, and human values.

This realization has strengthened rather than weakened my appreciation of Sikhism. Sikh philosophy provides an ethical and spiritual framework within which knowledge can be directed toward seva, justice, equality, compassion, and the welfare of all. The Sikh principle of Sarbat da Bhala (the well-being of all) offers an especially powerful ethical orientation in a world where scientific and technological capabilities are expanding rapidly.

My interest in science and Sikhism has therefore increasingly become an interest in responsibility. Scientific knowledge gives humanity extraordinary power. Technology can transform societies, but it can also create new forms of inequality, environmental degradation, surveillance, conflict, and alienation. Artificial intelligence is a particularly important example. The question is no longer simply whether we can create increasingly powerful technologies. We must also ask what kind of human beings we want to become while creating and using them.

Here I find Sikh teachings deeply relevant. Seva reminds me that knowledge should serve humanity. Vand Chhako challenges excessive individualism and encourages sharing. Kirat Karo connects meaningful work with ethical responsibility. Sarbat da Bhala expands our moral horizon beyond ourselves and our immediate communities. These principles can provide valuable ethical questions for scientists and technologists.

My engagement with Sikhism through science has also taught me to resist two opposite temptations. The first is to force modern scientific discoveries into Gurbani and claim that every scientific theory was somehow predicted by the Sikh Gurus. Such claims may appear attractive, but they can weaken rather than strengthen Sikh scholarship. Gurbani does not require validation through contemporary scientific theories. Its spiritual and ethical significance cannot be reduced to whether a modern scientific proposition can be found within it.

The second temptation is to assume that because science cannot empirically measure a spiritual proposition, spirituality must therefore be meaningless. This position misunderstands both science and spirituality. Science is an extraordinarily powerful method for investigating the empirical world, but it is not necessarily a complete philosophy of human existence. Recognizing the limits of a methodology is not a rejection of that methodology; it is an expression of intellectual maturity.

Consequently, I increasingly see my work as an attempt to build a bridge rather than to establish a hierarchy. I do not want science to dominate Sikhism, nor do I want religious belief to dictate scientific conclusions. I want the two to enter into a respectful conversation. Science can encourage Sikhs to cultivate intellectual curiosity, evidence-based thinking, humility, and a scientific temper. Sikh philosophy, in turn, can encourage scientists and technologists to reflect more deeply upon ethics, interconnectedness, compassion, justice, and the purposes for which knowledge is employed.

Perhaps the most important lesson I have learned from this journey is that both science and Sikh spirituality can cultivate humility. Science continually reminds me how much remains unknown. Sikhism reminds me that human ego (haumai) can become an obstacle to wisdom. The scientist who believes that humanity already possesses all answers risks intellectual arrogance. The religious person who believes that every inherited interpretation is beyond question risks spiritual stagnation. Both positions can benefit from humility.

My journey from physics toward Sikh thought has therefore not been a journey away from science. Nor has it been an attempt to make Sikhism scientific. It has been a journey toward a broader understanding of knowledge.

I continue to see myself as a student: of nature, of science, of Gurbani, of Sikh philosophy, and of the human condition. Physics taught me to look carefully at the universe. Sikh thought has encouraged me to ask how I should live within that universe. Science has expanded my sense of cosmic wonder; Sikhism has deepened my sense of ethical responsibility. Together, they have encouraged me to move from merely asking “How does the universe work?” toward the equally important question, “How should I live responsibly within it?”

For me, that is the real value of viewing Sikhism through the lens of science. It is not an attempt to prove faith through physics. It is an invitation to bring the spirit of inquiry, humility, wonder, and intellectual honesty into the study of Sikhism and, at the same time, to bring questions of ethics, compassion, meaning, and human responsibility into our engagement with science.

The journey continues, and perhaps that is precisely what makes it meaningful: the willingness to keep questioning, keep learning, and keep standing in wonder before the mystery of existence.
