Three qualities of Maya lead to attachment. It is all-pervasive and anyone who takes birth has to die one day and all those coming here they remain affected by the influence of Maya unless one is Graced upon by the Lord. The Lord Himself has created it. The effect of Maya and how it has influenced the mankind has been stated at many places in bani:

mwieAw kwrix krY aupwau ] kbih n GwlY sIDw pwau [1151-15]

It is only those who really become Gurmukh i.e by following Guru’s Teachings/Gurmat/ bani/Guru Shabads that he obtains the Fourth stage. The stage is called as ‘Turia’ state. Any person in this stage is at higher spiritual level. This spiritual level is also obtained if it is either pre-ordained or the individual is Graced upon by Kartaar. In this state the Maya and tri-gunas have no effect on the seeker/devotee. It is the Lord who takes those into His sanctuary in whose mind He dwells in the form of Name of Lord.Only those who are virtuous finds place in Sat-sangat. It is sat-sangat that one can really become close to the Lord. Bani further states that He is always present in the Sat-sangat. There is lot of emphasis on sat-sangat in Bani.

sqsMgiq kYsI jwxIAY ] ijQY eyko nwmu vKwxIAY ] (1, 72-1)

One is advised to work according to Gurmat and always remain in the simran of the Almighty, the self existent Lord. Keep on Praising Him. It is through the true sabad /bani that one merges into the Lord. [In the above line the phrase ‘sache sabad Milao’ appears and it has no face /independent meaning unless some thing is assigned to it.I have assigned the meaning that: one merges into the Lord through the contemplation of bani. There can some other ways also in which the line can be assigned some meaning so that the coherence is maintained.]

Those who have understood the true significance of the Naam, have been spoken of very high by the Guru sahibaan in this line. They overcome ego and Guru Sahib are in full praise of those devotees. It is by seeking the sanctuary of the persons, who constantly practice Naam, that one may get the benefit of treasure of Naam and one remain intuitively absorbed in it.

Having stated this, Guru Sahibs further instructs that without Guru one cannot find His sanctuary and one cannot find His Naam. One should have a Guru, with the guidance of whom, one can find Him or one can understand His essence. One who, with the blessings of Guru, overcomes the Lower instincts ,that appear on account of five senses, remains in the state of spiritual bliss and thus one become a devotee as the Lord likes. In another words, one becomes eligible for His grace.

    ਜੇਹਾ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਕਿਰ ਜਾਿਣਆ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
    ਏਹੁ ਸਹਸਾ ਮੂਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਾਉ ਲਾਏ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
    ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕ ਜੋਿਤ ਦੁਇ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਸਬਿਦ ਿਮਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੪੪॥{ਪੰਨਾ 30}

As one wants to understand the lord one enjoys the spiritual bliss accordingly. There is not an iota of doubt that if one meets the Guru through the Guru shabad/Bani that devotee and the Guru becomes one i.e. Ek Jyot. [There remains no difference between the Guru and the devotee] It is thus clear that the devoteee can meet the Guru through the shabad i.e. by leading the life as ordained in bani.
