Now, skewed sex ratio hits cattle

Ludhiana, October 2
Those who think the problem of a skewed sex ratio is limited to humans only, think again! The problem is as grave among cattle. In fact, more so if one goes by figures. And, the situation surely is alarming in Punjab.

The only difference is that while among humans the number of females is on the decline, among animals it is the other way round. Female cows and buffaloes are given preference over males because of their ability to produce milk and progeny, while large-scale mechanisation in the farm sector and scientific methods of breeding have rendered male animals redundant.

This has led to a drastic fall in the number of male cattle and buffaloes in the state over the last few years.

The problem of a skewed sex ratio among cows and buffaloes is known to have persisted since a long time. But, a startling fact that has come to light is that dairy farmers are in the state are increasingly resorting to killing the male calves. Starving them by denying their share of the mother’s milk and a healthy diet, the dairy farmers manage to “get rid of the unwanted animals which are nothing but a burden on their resources,” disclosed Dr AK Jain, senior dairy scientist, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

Dr Jain further said the figures of male animal versus female in the state were shocking. “During a survey done in the year 2007, there were 17.61 lakh cows in Punjab. Out of which 13.37 lakh were females and just 4.24 lakh males; thus, a sex ratio of 3:1,” he disclosed.

The situation is worse among buffaloes. As the easiest option available to dairy farmers is to send the male buffaloes, even few days’ old calves, to slaughter houses to get rid of them. Out of the total 50.01 lakh buffaloes in the state in 2007, 45.19 lakh were females while the number of male buffaloes in the state was a paltry 4.82 lakh in 2007, revealed Dr Jain. The sex ratio of buffaloes in Punjab is 9:1.

“The situation has only worsened over the last two years. Everyday scores of male animals are killed by dairy farmers not only across the state but all over the country,” he remarked. Meanwhile, Dr Sandeep Jain, member, Animal Welfare Board of India, said the authorities were aware of the goings-on but in the absence of any formal complaints, no action can be initiated against the erring individuals.

“However, the accused can be booked under Section 429 of the IPC and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960,” he said.

The "MILK" is NOT Milk of KINDNESS..its full of BLOOD of Malik Bhago.
Milk that should have gone to the CALF...the one that was so brutally MURDERED !!
Isnt this PRAYA HAKK ?? I am SURE Guru nanak Ji would AGREE..and Praya hakk is PORK and BEEF respectivley...

"milk" flows in the Veins of Punjabi Sikhs...originally it was the custom to let the Calf have a few minutes of Chunggh...suck milk..and then the farmer took the rest...NOW..the Calf is SLAUGHTERED..and the farmer takes ALL the milk.

Also..the Farmers' children have NO MILK...its either SOLD..or even worse...taken to those SANT DERAS...for the Sants?BABAS to grow their Bellies on !! I have seen how Baltees pails of Milk are sent tot he deras..but the children survive on chah..tea..no wonder the future of Punjab is looking like under 5 ft skinny legged baiyas type...not the giant six footers strapping lads of past...

THIS is the REALITY...:advocate::advocate::advocate::advocate:

Im no cattle farmer but isn't the cattle ratio always skewed?

I mean driving through Countryside of Australia you see like 15 cows and one bull to look after them all(what a lucky bloke). Plus other farmers borrow the services of that bull too.

How could the sex ratio in cattle is going to be skewed unless farmers intentionally remove male calves. In west eating veil is culture so they eat them while in India it is illegal to slaughter a cow.Earlier male calves were castrated and were made to plough fields or pull loads but now with no economic benefit for farmers as machines have replaced oxen so they are being starved or killed by farmers.

Haha this is funny :D:D

2-3 years back a same discussion was happening on jattworld that 80% of canadian jatt sikh youths are 6 feet or above but in Punjab their cousins are struggling to reach 5 feet 6 inches.

Now what logic vege fascists will who says its ok to drink milk as animal is not killed
Are they going to ask Gurdwara's in Punjab to stop use of milk

No this sort of vegetarianism is forgiven because animals that are hurt are out of site and out of mind.:p

I had this debate a while ago, and while rational vegetarians acknowledged that the real issue was they wished not to consume flesh (it was their own personal choice), there were others who stated they would now become Vegan (even more extreme). While the bulk wished to remain ignorant.

Guru Nanak must have seen the full spectre of this, and that is why he stated fools argue such irrelevance.

Whether it is skewed ration in animals, or humans, the motives behind it are Materialism, Greed, and Egotism. That is the real problem.

I am glad this has been posted.
