Marry Indian men and save Russia, says feminist

Moscow: Indian men promise to be ideal spouses for Russian women, affected as they are by a high male death rate, due to unhealthy lifestyles.

That is the opinion of Maria Arbatova, leading Russian feminist author and prominent television presenter.

"The import of eligible bachelors from India is my big geopolitical idea," she told RIA Novosti news agency.

India can be of help now that Russia has come to grips with its formidable demographic problem, Arbatova said during the launch of her latest book "A Taste of India" at the 20th Moscow International Book Fair recently.

"First, both Russians and Indians are Indo-Europeans, and we speak related languages. Just look at the many similarities between Sanskrit and modern Russian vocabularies. Second, and even more important, the archetypal Indian man is a fanatic paterfamilias. To raise many children is his cherished dream, and he makes the best possible husband," remarked Arbatova, who is married to Shumeet of West Bengal.

Attracting Indian bachelors to Russia should be a government policy, she argues, or Russia will soon have two crosses to bear, one of its own male deaths and the other the Chinese birth rate.

"Asian Russia, from the Pacific coast up to the Urals, is full of Chinese men anxious to marry Russian girls. If the Chinese are not promptly balanced out, no matter by whom - Indians, Africans or extraterrestrials - either Asian Russia will become a Chinese province before 2050 or Chinese will become Russia's second official language," she jokes ironically.

"Just look, Russia has two employment agencies in China, and none in India. Shame!"

Arbatova's book went on sale last spring and was on the bestseller list in summer. Britain's
International Biographical Centre of Cambridge has awarded her its 20th Century Outstanding Achievement gold medal.

The author points out many similarities between Russian and Indian life. "Socialism got my country out of the Big Game for 70 years. Colonialism did the same to India for two centuries. Both nations are now getting back to their sources in the age of globalisation.

That's hard to do - like walking home inside a centrifuge," she says.

If I were to marry a Russian woman and have her follow me everywhere, all the pleasant smiles I get from Punjabi women would be extinguished. And this is something I am not willing to give up. Their smiles make my days pleasant.

Namjap ji,

You were perchance reacting to a very subtle cultural reality -- or not so subtle. See, you are a sensitive guy!

Indian men and women have been immigrating to all points of the globe. Hence, moving to Russia would only be one more destination. Two questions for the men.

1. Did anyone pick up on the implication that the Indian men are supposed to move to Russia? Not the other way around.

2. Did anyone notice that the rationale for moving and marrying is to solve Russia's political and economic challenges? As understood by the moderator.

Wow! That is what I call human currency. Strong against other foreign currencies I suppose.

China and russia share borders so obviously russians don't want more chinese in russia because there is every chance that they could declare parts of russia as chinese parts. Also if i am not wrong in russia female to male ratio is 1200:1000 so obviously they want men from other countries

In the US it is called mail-order brides. In Russia, mail-order bridegrooms? New twist.

Kelly_Kaur ji, yep! The tone seems to be about everything but marriage and the family. Indian men -- a strategic resource. Beating out even the extra-terrestrials. You got what it takes! We knew that anyway.

Marriage is not a word. It's a sentence. Life-long sentence. (Unknown author)

The old saying is: "Nobody gets married to his wife. One got married to his fiancee, but it was a completely different person..." In the case of Russian - Western marriages it's suddenly true.
The naked truth about marrying a Russian woman

Hard to believe this suggestion was made by a feminist; sounds like the sort of thing a Soviet-era social engineer would think up.

There has been an influx of Russians, Lithuanians and Ukranians into Jamaica in the last couple years, mainly thru the exotic-dance industry. A few have married rather well. Strange thing, but here, the Russian woman's rep is rather different: she is considered materialistic, devious, oversexed and violent. In fact, i lived with a she-Ukranian for awhile, 2004-6, on and off.

No comment. :)

Kelly ji, it certainly feels like a racist notion to me, but how often is a darker race is preferred to a lighter one?

kds ji, i'm almost prepared to wager that most Russians who look like Anna Kournikova can't play chess like Kasparov!

same thing in the US. actually, since the fall of the soviet union, i think there's been an influx of Russian, Lithuanian, and Ukranian women in nearly every western country via the sex industry. and often these women aren't there by choice, but are slaves to "agents" who had promised them jobs as nannies or domestic workers.

i wonder how much of the skewed female:male ratio in russia has to do with the massive export of women as sex slaves?

I wonder that too; combined with economic struggle and a very busy "mafia" it gives you this underground, semi-forced, half-legitimate immigration.

What it will mean in the long term i daren't guess, although i have met a couple beautiful children from Russo-Jamaican unions.

Here are your answers
The Hindu : Front Page : “Import Indian bridegrooms for Russian brides”
A Russian feminist has proposed a radical solution to the falling birth rate — importing Indian bridegrooms for Russian girls. Maria Arbatova, writer and TV moderator, who married an Indian businessman a few years ago “after 25 years of keeping marrying Russians”, thinks Indian men make ideal husbands.

“They are crazy about their family and children,” she said presenting her new book, ‘Tasting India’, here. “What is more, Indians, like Russians, are Indo-Europeans, and many Sanskrit and Russian words have the same roots.”

She is married to Indian and happy.

I agree that all russians cannot play chess but still it prooves they are 1 of the most intelligent people

no, it proves that a very small number of russians are among the most intelligent people. it doesn't say anything at all about the population in general. :)
there are a handfull of geniuses in any country. we can't judge an entire country by their best and brightest.

one thing i'm not so sure about... will people willingly migrate to russia? i can't imagine it being an easy transition for an indian... i mean, there's not much in the way of jobs, very little money, and it's really really cold! :D

Great champions of sports only come from countries who have culture of that sport. As an indian i accept that in physical sports indians are no match for people from other countries.
That's why we don't see any indian in european soccer leagues,NBA,etcOn the other hand pleanty of indians all over the world are engaged in brainy jobs.Russia has culture of chess that's why russians produced great champions and their rivals in this field are we indians

wasn't chess invented in india? you guys have an unfair advantage! :D

indians do pretty well in cricket wherever they live. i think you do well in field hockey too, right?

it's just a matter of what sports are encouraged in the local culture. for example, japan has produced many excellent baseball players, but korea has not. are koreans and japanese people really so different? not really, baseball is simply much more popular in japan.

soviet russia strongly encouraged math and science over other scholastic endevours, resulting in great chess players and scientists.

i don't think this means russians are smarter than other people, it's just what is encouraged in their society.

i hope i'm making some sort of sense. :)
