Karamat (Supernatural Powers) in Sikhi

Recently, I saw an online video in which a Sikh gentleman, well known and well respected by a certain section of our Sikh community, was talking about “Karamat” in Sikhi. What he said in Punjabi roughly translates as follows:

“There is no Karamat in Sikh religion, if there were Karamats than why did not the entire army who attacked Golden Temple in 1984 lose their eyesight, became blind and got defeated by some Karamat before it could attack the Golden temple. If there is Karamat then why did 5th Guru had to endure torture, why did 9th guru had to be beheaded and why did not the10th guru got rid of Wazir Khan by some Karamat before he could inflict any torture and death on his young children”.

This Sikh gentleman appears in many Gurmat related videos and uses “professor” as a title with his name although by his own admission he dropped out of school in grade 5 and did not have any schooling beyond grade 5.

His statement prompted me to share my thoughts on what he said in the video with the hope to encourage a dialogue on this issue of “Karamat” in Sikhi.

My immediate reaction to his words was a bit unsettling as I noticed a streak of narcissism in his tone and his message. To me his statement suggests that he either believes that his wisdom and intellect is as good and perhaps better than the Gurus’ because he seems to know what was in the minds of Gurus during these atrocious events or it is that the professor is trying to bring down the profound insight and wisdom of our Gurus down to his level.

What does Gurmat says about Karamat (Supernatural Powers)? When we talk about Karamat, I believe it refers to extraordinary abilities and capabilities that transcend natural laws and scientific explanation and includes levitation, clairvoyance, precognition and power to physically alter the physical body etc.

In GGS, supernatural powers are referred to as ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ. There are several references to these two words in Gurbani and also cautionary flags that these are emotional attachments and impediments for spiritual growth along the Naam Marg. These references and the cautionary reminder as to not engage in these practices is in fact an acknowledgement that these supernatural powers do exist in the material world (Maya), and some among us long for these power and acquire through meditative/yogic practices. As such, the existence of “Karamats” is not denied in Gurbani; however, its application is vigorously discouraged as these can promote emotional attachment to Maya and reinforce and inflame Humain (ਹਉਮੈ) in us. Baba Ram Rai the son of Gur Har Rai Sahib (7th Guru) was excommunicated for this very reason

(Riches and the supernatural spiritual powers of the Siddhas are all emotional attachments; through them, the Naam, the Name of the Akalpurkh, does not come to dwell in the mind.)
(Serving the Guru, the mind becomes immaculately pure, and the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled.)

Gurbani suggests if we are attuned to Naam, these supernatural powers can be at the beck and call of a spiritually elevated person.

(Riches, wisdom, supernatural spiritual powers and peace are obtained by meditating through Guru Gyan)
(Hearing the Name, all supernatural spiritual powers are obtained, and wealth follows along.)

Guru Arjun Sahib (5th Guru) willingly endured the torture he was subjected to by Jahangir in 1606. In the scorching heat of May/June, he was forced to sit on a burning red-hot iron plate while boiling sand was poured over his body. Despite the intense pain to observers, Guru Sahib remained in a state of calm, meditating and reciting prayer. Was this divine endurance of intense torture an ordinary thing. Was it an ordinary power that was on display or was there some extraordinary power (Karamat) to endure the level of intense torture Guru Sahib went through with cool and calm composure. Guru Sahib was not in a state of ਹਉਮੈ to put up this display. With profound humility he accepted the Hukum and in this state of torture that he perhaps separated himself from the physical body that was being grilled on hot iron plate and showered with hot sand in the scorching heat of May/June. (Although many with scientific ideation or otherwise skeptical about Karamats may ask how. I would ask is there any possible explanation that someone can go through such extreme torture without any apparent emotion or discomfort and pain). This is possible as per Gurmat; Gurbani tells me (Those who meditate in remembrance of the True Guru, are blessed with wealth and prosperity, supernatural spiritual powers and the nine treasures.)

The same can be said about the beheading of 9th Guru and about the family sacrifices of 10th Guru.

Gurbani suggested that through Naam Simran and following Naam Marg as spelled out in Gurbani, one can elevate to such a level that these supernatural powers become subservient to such a person. But an intentional display of these acquired powers inflames Humain (ਹਉਮੈ ) and is vigorously discouraged in Gurmat. It suggests that it is possible that among us some elevated souls (Sant/ Bhagat) who have these superpowers to varying degrees.

Precognition is also a supernatural power and let us go to GGS (Ang 722).

Guru Nanak Sahib (1469- 1539) witnessed the devastation and atrocities during the invasion of Babul – the Mughal emperor who died in 1530. Seeing this devastation and atrocities, Guru Sahib in Babarvani foretold what was coming in 1540.

(As the Bani comes to me, so do I express it, O Lalo)
(Bringing the marriage party of sin, {Babar} has invaded by coming from Kabul, demanding our land as his wedding gift, O Lalo.)

(Nanak speaks the Word of Truth; he proclaims the Truth at this, the right time)
(Coming in seventy-eight (1521 A.D.), they will depart in ninety-seven (1540 A.D.), and then another disciple of man will rise up.)

History attests and presents evidence of Guru sahib’s power of clairvoyance. Babur died in 1530 and his son took over when in 1540 AD ( Bikrami 1597) Sher Shah Suri emerged (as Guru Sahib foretold) and expelled Mughals from India.

I leave it to the readers to assess whether this is a Karamat or not. The definition of Karamat includes precognition ( clairvoyance).

We have an emerging breed of Sikh Parcharks and some intellectuals who often question Guru Nanak Sahib’s disappearance in Ravi and about the authenticity of “Guru Sahib’s handprint” at Panja Sahib. I fully believe in the authenticity of these remarkable events based on what and how Gurbani informs me.

Many events and observation that many of us claim as unscientific and refuse to believe in their authenticity are not truly unscientific phenomena rather our science has not advanced enough to be able to explain them. "Higgs boson" is a prime and a somewhat recent example that should bring some humility in those with scientific ideation or are otherwise skeptical about Karamat in Sikhi. Gurmat is very clear; it vigorously discourages pursuits for these supernatural powers but does not deny their existence and suggests that they can be subservient to those few among us who elevate themselves through Naam.

Your Thoughts please.

These dates do not match with what you say. Baber conquered India in 1526 after the battle of panipat but Nanak said many came and many will go. the numbers are mentioned to complete the poetry cuplet

Hi Bhaji. If we view it from the perspective that this entire khel and earth is literally a projection from Nothing- we live in the dream of God- everything, everywhere around us is an illusion- it can perhaps become easier to accept that these spiritual gifts exist.

Gurbani tells us that the greatest magic is Naam/ Truth. This Naam has created the entire universe. This universe itself (including all humans and beings) is one massive miracle. These powers exist but as you said, we're not encouraged to use or become attached to them, they are seen to be blocks on the bhagti path, can cause ego and can have alot of negative effects on us. Most of us cannot be trusted to ethically use these gifts- morally, we are all sinners- most of us are not sants so how can we be trusted to use them. And they're supposed to be to help run God's creation, not misused.

The Gurus accepted the Shaheedi as Hukam, however we cannot claim to know the state of the Gurus during shaheedi or at all- they are One with God. It is believed that they felt the pain and accepted it as Hukam though- and they taught us through their shaheedi to accept the hukam as our karam no matter how painful. Due to us reaping what we sow in this janam and previous lives, and the fact that some of us will need to accept shaheedi, as well as the fact we will all die in a few decades time- this teaching is invaluable. They are the greatest and most beautiful teachers.

Mr. Bains, thank you for your comment albeit it is a snap comment. I know you are a very informed person and I have read many of your detailed comments on other online sites/blogs. In one of your comments to someone, I recall ( if I am not mistaken) you indicated that you have read the entire GGS a number of times; many of us therefore are fortunate to have the opportunity to read and reflect on your comments.

Could you please respond to the following questions that flow out of your comment that you posted here:

1) In the Sabad I quoted in my initial post, Guru sahib is narrating what he observed and what he saw coming in the future. Guru Sahib was present when the oppressors ( Mughals or whoever) invaded Punjab/India. But in your case, you perhaps got the date 1526 by Googling that there was a battle of Panipat, so what Guru Sahib is saying is wrong or I got the date wrong. A person of your stature who is profoundly knowledgeable about Gurbani, what do you think; is Google is right or a person ( like Guru Nanak Sahib) who was alive, present and personally observed the devastation and atrocities that went on, is correct about the time 1521 or 1526 when the invaders came. Do you think Guru Sahib is lying when he says ਸਚ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਸੀ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਬੇਲਾ and you are right because you checked out history in Google॥ ???

2) I notice you commented on the first date (1521 AD) but did not say anything about the second date (1540 AD) that Guru Sahib underscored. I am sure you know the words "clairvoyance" or 'prophecy" refer to unobservable or future events that are unknown. The word Karamat I am alluding to in this post relates to the future date ( 1540 AD); it has no relevance to 1521 or 1524 AD because whatever Guru Sahib observed with his own eyes and said about when Mughals came is not Karamat; What he said about the future relates to the word karamat !!!!

May I please ask you why did you choose not to reflect on the future date that Guru sahib is talking about - since the post is about Karamat.

I humbly request you to please respond to these two questions so that people who read your 2-line comment do not get confused or remain conflated.

However, the following line from your post prompted me to pause and reflect: "It is believed that they felt the pain and accepted it as Hukam though- and they taught us through their shaheedi to accept the hukam as our karam no matter how painful. "

Here is my reflection:

Whether we talk about Guru Arjun Sahib's shaheedi or torture of Sababjadhas or Bhai Mati and Bhai Dayala or Bhai Mati Singh. There is no question they all felt pain when subjected to intense torture. Guru Sahib's physical body got roasted on a hot plate and then we have examples that the body of Bhai Mati Das/ Dayala ji sawed in two pieces for one and wrapped in cotton and set on fire for another or of Bhai Mati Singh whoes physical body was cut in pieces. There is no doubt they all experienced intense pain - none of us can survive that level of torture. Yes this is all Hukum and they accepted Hukum. However, the question is how could they endure such a pain (accept Hukum) when it is humanly impossible for anyone to endure. Saying that they simply accepted it as Divine Hukum does not answer the basic question - how?

In my opinion, the answer is that they had something more that we don't have - some unique inner strength or inner power that we don't have but we can develop through engaging in Gurbani and elevating to a higher threshold ( As per Gurbani, Ridhi Sidhi follow Naam). These inner powers are not for display for the reason that you cited (haumain). It is because of this inner strength/power, Guru Sahib and other could endure the torture they were subjected to. It is the same power why Baba Deep Singh could keep on fighting when his head was cut off - with such inner powers one does not need to see only with physical eyes -- this is what clairvoyance mean. Karamat is an overarching word that includes Clairvoyance.

While remaining on this subject of Karamat, I recently saw an online discussion in which this a so-called "professor" suggesting that if our Gurus had Karamat then why did not Guru Gobind Singh Sahib wiped out enemy forces by Karamat rather than getting so many Sikhs and Sahibzadas killed.

Karamat or Extra Sensory Powers are not Absolute - the Absolute power resides only with Akalpurkh. What powers one has and what powers one does not have is known only to those who have those powers. This is my postulation and I leave it for someone to disapprove it.

To my humble understanding Sikhi's central focus is not about miracles but about connection to and love/devotion to the divine. We can not put limits on what the Guru can and cannot do nor we can we fully comprehend why things do or do not happen. Everything happens by Hukam. Guru Arjun Dev Ji Maharaj ji says "Your will is sweet," while being tortured on the hot plate. Gurbani says wherever you keep me that place is heaven and that everything is for good. So maybe there was a deeper spiritual lesson or some other factor in play but that does not diminish the Guru in any way. Bol Chaak Maaf.

Hi Bhaji. The Gurus are one with God. They could crush the whole universe with a look if they wanted to. But they accepted the Hukam, and also taught us to do this. They taught us in action with the way they chose to live their lives and decisions- living Truth in action. Naam/ Truth is the greatest power, riddhi siddhis are duality, part of the whole, not the whole/ Truth.

The Gurus didn't get Anyone killed, they spoke and practiced Truth, if the Mughals wanted to be mentally ill and homocidal maniacs, thats not the Gurus fault, the professor you speak of is deluded.

The Gurus are and were merged in God. I can't claim to know what or how they felt or their state, being One with God, explaining that is beyond me, they are beyond great. I guess the only way we could even begin to comprehend the state of say a sant would be to progress in our bhagti and reach the state of a sant. I'm just a sinner.
