A Sikh man has been injured by a petrol bomb that was hurled at the Sri Guru Nanak Sikh Temple Gurdwara in Grimsby, on Saturday

58 year-old Kirpal Singh was out side the Sikh Gurdwara on Albert Street West in Grimsby when a glass bottle containing a flammable substance was thrown over the alleyway wall.

The bottle erupted and the flames engulfed Kirpal Singh, Gianni Boota Singh said he was left "disturbed and frightened" after seeing Kirpal "engulfed in flames".

Kirpal was taken to Grimsby's Diana Princess of Wales Hospital and has around 30 blisters on his ankles and lower legs from the flames, he is still in hospital.

“Kirpal Singh foot was badly burnt, fortunately he is doing well, he was visiting the Gurdwara after being allowed by the hospital where he is a patient to visit his place of worship

“Grimsby has only has small Sikh community who sadly have had other incidents where the Gurdwara has been targeted. Eighteen months ago the Nishan Sahib (Holy Flag) was burnt” said Boota Singh.

The Grimsby 35/40 families in Grimsby have had a place of worship since 1994

The Sikh community and the police have appealed for witness to come forward. Kirpal Singh son Harp, 33, also of Grimsby, is also appealing for help to find out who is responsible.

He said: "Whoever did it is a coward – they didn't come round the front. It was lucky it wasn't a Sunday. We can have dozens outside the temple – someone could have been killed.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "This incident is being treated very seriously and an investigation is underway."

Witnesses, or anyone with information are being asked to call 0845 60 60 222, quoting log 550 of 26/6/10, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
