Gurfateh ji,

I am 60 year old woman with long kesh. I hv severe osteoporosis where simply moving also fractures my ribs. Also recently had flu and now having heart issues.
I am not able to wash my hair for month, as I cannot bend or turn my neck back. I have long hair.
There is no one in my family except younger brother who too is heart patient.
When last year I had a fall and i broke my spine then he did sewa.
I don't want to be burden on anyone.
I discussed with my doctor he said to cut hair short so that they are cleaned when I shower.
But I am Puran gursikh. Had Amrit also but since past 10 years underwent surgery and now only do Simran in bed. Financially no strong.
Our school friends support us monthly for our food and medicals.
Please advise. Thanks to all.

Gurfateh ji,
From a Sikh (Gurmat) perspective, the most important principle is sincerity of heart and remembrance of Waheguru ji, not outward form when genuine physical limits exist. Kesh is sacred for an Amritdhari Sikh, but Sikhism also recognizes majboori (helplessness) due to illness or incapacity.
In your case: severe osteoporosis, fractures, heart issues, and inability to care for long hair, this is a medical condition, not a matter of neglect or rejection of Sikhi. Guru Sahib does not expect practices that harm the body or exceed one’s capacity. When intention is pure, Hukam is accepted with humility.
Even lying in bed, doing Simran is a deep spiritual practice. Seva by others is also part of Sikh values, not a burden. If doctors strongly advise short hair for hygiene and safety, it can be seen as a compassionate medical necessity rather than a spiritual failure.
Waheguru ji understands your pain and devotion. Your connection to Naam remains intact through love, remembrance, and acceptance of Hukam.
Regards,
