Delhi Red Fort Blast 2025: An Analytical Study

Dr Dalvinder Singh Grewal

On Monday, November 10, 2025, 13 people were killed and 24 injured in a car blast near Red Fort Metro Station (Gate 1). Initial investigation suggests that the Hyundai i20 being driven by Dr. Umar Nabi (a doctor from Pulwama), on which the explosive was loaded, was prematurely detonated. Dr. Umar Nabi was allegedly driving the Hyundai i20 when he came to know that his accomplices were raided, and 2900 kg deadly explosives and some weapons were recovered from his accomplice Muzammil then. As traced by police, this i20 has been on the road for about 3 hours. It may be that he might be waiting for directions from his handlers about the exact location where the explosive was to be detonated. Having panicked at the news of the arrest of his accomplices, probably, and fearing that his name too may come up, he detonated the explosive remotely, taking his car from the parking area onto the crowded road in front of Red Fort near the parking area of Red Fort Metro Station. He vanished before the blast took place, and the police are searching for him. In this blast, at least 12 people were killed and 20 injured. He said that he is a resident of Koil village in Pulwama. His father further said that he had completed his medical studies in Allahabad.

Dr. Umar Nabi's sister-in-law Muzamil said that he was an introvert since childhood, did not have many friends, and used to focus on his studies and work. "He was working as faculty in a college in Faridabad. He called on Friday to say that he was busy with exams and would return home after three days. He was a reserved person since childhood," Muzamil said.

Police sources said another accused in the blast is Shaheen. Shaheen is believed to have links with Dr. Muzamil, from whom a large quantity of explosives was seized in Faridabad before his capture. Muzamil was wanted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in a separate case related to a social media post supporting the banned outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed. Powerful explosives were used. The case has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). An FIR has been registered under the UAPA (Terrorism Act) and the Explosives Act. Three doctors (two from Faridabad's Al-Falah University) have been arrested. DNA samples were collected to confirm the identity of the driver.

On the basis of preliminary investigation, officials claimed that Doctor Shaheen Saeed was among the eight people arrested after busting an interstate terror module, which was part of Jamaat-ul-Momineen, a newly formed organization launched by the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed last month. She was arrested in Faridabad. Officials alleged that Dr. Saeed, who is in her 30s and is believed to be part of Faridabad's Al-Falah University, was in touch with her handler in Pakistan with possible instructions to recruit more women for terrorist activities. In Lucknow, her father pleaded his ignorance about her involvement in terror activities and said he had come to know about her arrest only through the media.

Jamaat-ul-Momineen was formed after the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed decided to form its women's wing. Its formation was announced in October this year through a letter addressed to Jaish-e-Mohammed chief and UN-designated terrorist Masood Azhar, in which Sadia Azhar was named its chief. Sadia Yousuf is the wife of Azhar, who was among many killed during Operation Sindoor on May 7, when India attacked the Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters at Markaz Subhanallah in Bahawalpur. Dr. Saeed's alleged role suggests that Jaish-e-Mohammed is following the ISI policy of recruiting female attackers on the lines adopted by groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which used women in combat or suicide operations.

The incident has also highlighted the concerns of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, central security agencies, and the army operating in Jammu and Kashmir that the ISI is trying to influence more women in the terror module, officials said. The Jammu and Kashmir Police has already intensified its vigil on several educational institutions, especially private schools, as concerns are growing about alleged radicalization among young minds, especially girl students.

The officials said that disturbing information is coming from some private schools in Kashmir, which were allegedly involved in spreading radical ideologies among the youth, especially women. The rise in radicalization among women has also triggered some former separatist groups as they are worried that another religious fundamentalist movement from the other side of the Line of Control (LoC) will destabilize the valley's centuries-old 'Sufi' tradition.

Officials pointed to a sudden rise in pan-Islamist sentiments among the youth, including girls, in the Valley, as intelligence reports suggest that hardline religious leaders are inspiring them with a strict interpretation of Islam that rejects traditional Kashmiri practices, such as visiting shrines and paying obeisance to Sufi saints.

Officials said the Kashmir Valley's education system has been irreparably damaged, repeatedly proving incapable of presenting students with a vision of the future and thus resorting to a strict interpretation of Islam as a refuge.

Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and other cities have been put on high alert and security has been tightened at transport hubs and markets. Investigations are underway; the Red Fort has been closed till November 13. Home Minister Amit Shah said, "The culprits will face the full wrath of the agencies." Prime Minister Modi said, "It was a conspiracy whose perpetrators will not be spared." The Delhi government has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the deceased and ₹2 lakh for the injured. The UK has warned against travelling to the affected areas.

India's security and intelligence agencies need to be more cautious, as Pakistan's ISI agency is continuously increasing its activities. It does not seem to have learned any lesson from Operation Sindhur, nor does it have any intention of stopping terrorist activities, as is evident from the increasing terrorist activities in the Kashmir Valley. Importantly, it is evident from the increased powers of Pakistan's generals that Pakistan is preparing to do something bigger so that Pakistani Army Chief Munir can convert the democracy into a military dictatorship. Munir’s aggressive approach may thus lead to another war with India, which cannot be ruled out.

Dr. Umar Nabi, who was driving the explosives-laden car that blew up near the Red Fort, had planned a powerful blast timed around the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary on December 6, officials said on Wednesday.
The details of the plan have been pieced together after interrogation of the eight people arrested for their alleged links to the interstate 'white collar' Jaish-e-Mohammed terror module centered in Faridabad and conversations with their family, friends, and neighbors, the officials said.

Umar, a 28-year-old doctor based in south Kashmir's Pulwama district believed to have been killed in the November 10 Red Fort blast in which 12 people lost their lives, has emerged as key in the terror network spanning Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

His plan fell apart with the arrest of Dr Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie, alias Musaib, who taught at Faridabad's Al Falah University and from whose room 360 kg of ammonium nitrate was found. It is believed that Umar panicked and the explosion was accidental, the officials said.
According to officials, Umar was a loner and had an excellent academic record. A trip to Türkiye in 2021 with Ganaie, the first of the eight people to be arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police, led to a dramatic transformation and radicalization, they claimed.

It is believed the two met the overground workers of the banned JeM during the trip.

After the trip, a changed Umar allegedly began accumulating explosives, including ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and sulfur, with Ganaie and started storing them in and around the Al Falah campus, where he was pursuing higher studies.

According to officials, Umar informed the others about his December terror plan and began prepping for it by placing explosives in the Hyundai i20 he was driving on that fateful November 10.

It is likely that he was assembling a vehicle-based improvised explosive device (VBIED) after taking lessons on its construction and detonation circuit from open sources available on the internet, officials said.

Umar may have panicked on November 10 when a top Faridabad police officer appeared on television announcing that a terror module had been busted with the recovery of 2,900 kg of explosives in Faridabad, officials said. The 2,900 kg included the 360 kg of inflammable material recovered from Ganaie's rented accommodation.

Umar took refuge in a mosque in the walled city, where he stayed for three hours on Monday evening before driving out. A premature explosion took place. The VBIED was also incomplete, as shrapnel had yet to be assembled, the officials said.

Of the eight people arrested, seven are from Kashmir. They are Arif Nisar Dar, alias Sahil; Yasir-ul-Ashraf; and Maqsood Ahmad Dar, alias Shahid, from Nowgam in Srinagar; Maulvi Irfan Ahmad from Shopian; Zameer Ahmad Ahanger, alias Mutlasha, from the Wakura area of Ganderbal; Dr Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie, alias Musaib, from the Koil area of Pulwama; and Dr Adeel from the Wanpora area of Kulgam. Dr. Shaheen Sayeed is from Lucknow.

On October 26, Umar travelled to Kashmir and spent some time with his friends and relatives before starting his return journey to Faridabad. During this trip, he told his close relatives and friends that he would not be available for the next three months, the officials said.

The statement was corroborated by many of his friends, relatives questioned, and other co-accused to the police, they said. It is most likely that he wanted to plant the VBIED and then go underground for some time.

However, the plan took a U-turn after a meticulous investigation by the Srinagar police in a case related to putting up posters supporting the JeM in Srinagar led to the arrest of Ganaie. The posters were pasted on walls of the city on October 19.

That was the starting point of the investigation. This led to the unraveling of the interstate terror network after the CCTV showed Ganaie along with some others involved in the act.

The man driving the car that exploded near the Red Fort, killing 12 people and injuring several others, had visited a mosque near the Ram Leela Maidan, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Dr Umar Nabi, an assistant professor at Al-Falah University and believed to have been behind the wheel of the car that went up in flames on Monday, had parked the vehicle at the Sunehri Masjid parking lot around 3.19 pm, the officer said.

Before that, Nabi had gone to a mosque on Asaf Ali Road, close to Ram Leela Maidan, where he allegedly stayed for nearly three hours and offered namaaz. "He stayed there for around three hours before leaving and heading towards the Red Fort. We are probing the matter from all angles, including a suspected 'fidayeen' attack," a senior police officer told PTI.
Investigators are also examining what Umar did during his three-hour halt at the parking lot before he moved towards the Red Fort.

"He was constantly tracking updates about those arrested in the Faridabad module. We are also trying to verify if he was communicating with his handlers using a signal phone," another officer said.

The officer added that forensic experts are analyzing exhibits to detect fragments of a possible signal device that may have been used to stay in touch with handlers.

The Delhi Forensic Science Laboratory has collected over 40 samples from the blast site, including mangled remains of the vehicle, metal debris, and body parts.
A special team of experts has been constituted to examine the samples and identify the nature of explosives used, sources said.

Police sources added that agencies are also scanning CCTV footage from the mosque area and nearby streets to reconstruct Umar's movements before the explosion as part of efforts to ascertain whether anyone else was involved in facilitating the attack.

Meanwhile, the Delhi police have sounded an alert across all police stations, posts, and border checkpoints in the national capital to trace a red Ford EcoSport car suspected to be linked to the blast.

The alert was issued after the investigation revealed that the other suspects, already connected to the Hyundai i20 used in the explosion, were also in possession of another red car, the police source said.

The Delhi Police's FIR called the explosion "a bomb blast" as it invoked sections pertaining to conspiracy and punishment for a terror attack under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, officials said.

Initially, it was claimed that three people were in the car during the blast. However, it is now clear that only Nabi, who was on the run after the busting of the terror module, was driving the i20 car when the blast took place, officials noted.

After leaving the parking, he proceeded on the Chhata Rail Chowk road near the Red Fort and then took a U-turn. The blast occurred a few metres before the Red Fort police post, according to officials privy to the probe.

When asked if the EcoSport car bearing registration number DL 10 CK 0458 has been traced, a Faridabad police spokesperson confirmed over the phone, saying, "Yes, it has been found in Khandawali village."
Earlier, the Delhi police sounded an alert across all police stations, posts, and border checkpoints in the national capital to trace the red Ford EcoSport car.
The alert was issued after the investigation revealed that other suspects, already connected to the Hyundai i20 used in the explosion, were also in possession of another red-colored car.

At least five teams of Delhi Police were deployed to locate the vehicle, while neighboring Uttar Pradesh and Haryana Police had also been alerted to maintain heightened vigilance and assist in the search.
Sources said the red Ford EcoSport is registered in the name of Dr Umar Un Nabi, who was allegedly driving the car before the blast occurred.
The car's registration details were circulated to all border units, and the information has also been shared with the UP and Haryana Police to intensify the search.
The vehicle was suspected to have been used by Umar for reconnaissance activities
Meanwhile, the Delhi police rushed to an address in northeast Delhi's New Seelampur after learning that a red Ford EcoSport car, suspected to be linked to the Red Fort blast case, was registered at that location, an official said on Wednesday.
Police sources said the team immediately visited the site to verify the vehicle's ownership details after records showed the car was registered in the name of Dr. Umer Un Nabi. Investigators suspect that forged documents might have been used to purchase the car.
"The address mentioned in the car's registration papers led the police to New Seelampur, where they questioned residents and verified documents," said the police source.
During the visit, Imam Mohammad Tasawwur, who runs a madrasa at the same address, told PTI that he had never noticed any suspicious activity in the area.
"The police have taken my phone with them for investigation. We are extending our full support. Police must investigate the matter and arrest those who are behind the incident," Tasawwur said.
Another resident, Dilshad Saifi, who lives close to the same address, described the incident as deeply disturbing. "This is very painful. Such incidents should never happen. Those responsible must face strict punishment," Saifi told PTI.

The Delhi police has reconstructed a chilling journey of Dr Umar Nabi -- the accused in Monday's Red Fort blast that killed 13 people -- showing how he travelled from Haryana to Delhi through the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, halted for food at a roadside eatery, and spent the night inside his car before entering the national capital the next morning.

According to police sources, Umar's movements -- captured in footage from over 50 CCTV cameras -- indicate meticulous planning and deliberate attempts to avoid detection. He was first spotted leaving Faridabad early Monday morning, making multiple halts, including one at a dhaba where he ate and another at a mosque where he offered prayers.
Investigations revealed that before the blast, Umar went to Firozpur Jhirka in Haryana.

He took the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway route, where he reportedly stopped at a roadside dhaba and spent the night inside his car. He appeared to be in hiding but not in panic. He avoided major towns, preferring highways and small eateries," said a police source.

Later, he was again seen on CCTV cameras installed along the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, driving slowly toward Delhi. The footage shows him stopping twice, once for tea and once apparently to check his mobile phone.
Police said Umar re-entered Delhi the following morning through the Badarpur border, using the same route he had taken earlier from Faridabad. "He seemed to have planned every step, including his entry and exit routes, to avoid detection," said the police source.
The route-mapping shows that Umar, who drove a white Hyundai i20, entered Delhi from Faridabad and made multiple loops across the city between 8 am and 3 pm before finally parking near the Red Fort at 3:19 pm.
"Umar's car was first seen leaving Faridabad around 7:30 am near the Asian Hospital. He then crossed the Badarpur toll plaza at around 8:13 am, marking his entry into Delhi. From there, he moved through several parts of southeast Delhi, including Okhla and the industrial belt, crossed Connaught Place, before being spotted in east Delhi and later near central Delhi's Ring Road," said the police source.
The reconstruction using the CCTV footage shows that Umar deliberately avoided major arterial roads and instead took a zigzag path through crowded areas, possibly to confuse surveillance or to study crowd movements.
He was seen on cameras in multiple districts -- starting from Southeast Delhi, then East, New Delhi, Central, and Northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar, where he stopped at a roadside eatery around midday.
"He appeared calm, ordered food, and stayed for a while before continuing his journey," said the source.
After this stop, he drove back towards central Delhi, where he visited a mosque near Asaf Ali Road, close to the Ramlila Maidan. He offered prayers there and stayed for around three hours in the parking area, the footage shows.
Police said his phone activity during this period is also being closely examined. Investigators suspect he might have received instructions before proceeding toward the site.
"At 3:19 pm, Umar's car entered the parking area adjacent to the Red Fort complex, where it remained stationary for around three hours. CCTV footage shows the car parked quietly among other vehicles near the Sunehri Masjid parking," an officer privy to the investigation said.
Around 6:22 pm, the car was seen leaving the parking area and heading towards the Red Fort Metro Station side. Barely 30 minutes later, at 6:52 pm, the vehicle exploded in a powerful blast that shattered windows, scattered body parts across the road, and triggered panic among visitors and commuters in the area.
The explosion was captured in traffic surveillance footage, which showed a slow-moving white car suddenly erupting into a ball of fire amid rush-hour traffic. The blast that killed 13 people also injured more than two dozen others.
The Delhi Police and central agencies have now prepared a detailed hour-by-hour timeline of Umar's movements, using footage from CCTV cameras, toll plaza data, GPS traces, and mobile tower dumps.
Umar, who was known as an academically accomplished professional in his circle, allegedly turned radical over the past two years. Investigators said he had joined several suspected messaging groups.
The DNA test of samples collected from the Red Fort blast site has confirmed that Dr Umar Nabi was driving the car that exploded on Monday.
His mother's DNA samples were collected on Tuesday and sent here for examination. They were analysed along with the remains gathered from the blast site.
"The DNA results confirm that it was indeed Umar who was driving the fateful vehicle," said a source.

The DNA samples of Umar's mother were collected on Tuesday and sent here for examination, the sources said, adding that they were analysed along with the remains gathered from the blast site.
"The DNA results confirm that it was indeed Umar who was driving the fateful vehicle," said a source.

Umar was a key member of a "white collar" terror module busted earlier this week. He hails from Koil village in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama.
Hours after police busted the terror module with links to proscribed Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, and arrested eight people, including three doctors, the high-intensity blast ripped through a slow-moving car near Delhi's Red Fort area on Monday evening.
Around 3,000 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, potassium chlorate and sulphur were seized after police busted the terror module, which spanned across Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

An analysis of dump data retrieved from the mobile phone of Dr. Muzammil Ganaie, who was arrested after the police busted a white-collar terror module recently, showed that he conducted multiple reconnaissance of the Red Fort area in January this year, officials said.

The police said they suspect these recesses were part of a larger conspiracy to target the historic monument on Republic Day but were foiled due to intensified patrolling in the area at the time.
During the investigation, it was found that two of the key suspects, Dr Umar, who was driving the Hyundai i20 car that exploded, and Muzammil, had travelled to Turkey. Sources said the investigators have found Turkish immigration stamps in their passports and are examining whether the two met any foreign-based handler during their trip.
The Delhi police also sounded an alert across all police stations, posts, and border checkpoints in the city to trace a red Ford EcoSport car suspected to be linked to the Red Fort blast case, sources said.
The alert was issued after the investigation revealed that other suspects, already connected to the Hyundai i20 used in the explosion, were also in possession of another red-colored car.

Around 2,500 kg of ammonium nitrate, potassium chlorate, and sulfur were seized after the police busted the terror module, which spanned across Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited the LNJP Hospital and met the survivors, saying the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
"Went to LNJP Hospital and met those injured during the blast in Delhi. Praying for everyone's quick recovery. Those behind the conspiracy will be brought to justice!" Modi said in a post on X.
Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams collected around 40 samples from the blast site, said preliminary analysis suggested that one of the explosive samples is likely to be ammonium nitrate.
A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that analysis of the dump data showed Dr Muzammil's repeated presence in and around the Red Fort area in the first week of January.
The agencies are also analyzing mobile dump data from the Red Fort area between 3 pm and 6.30 pm on the day of the blast to track Dr Umar's movement and communication.
Dr Muzammil visited the Red Fort multiple times to study the security arrangements and crowd density patterns along with Dr Umar Nabi, an assistant professor at the Al-Falah University who is said to have been driving the car that exploded on Monday, officials said.
Their movements were corroborated through tower location data and CCTV footage collected from nearby areas, they added.
"These visits were part of a detailed reconnaissance ahead of a planned attack on January 26," the officer said.
The Special Cell of the Delhi police has detained a Faridabad-based car dealer and directed all second-hand car dealers across Delhi and adjoining states to verify and share details of recent vehicle sales, officials said on Wednesday.
Under the scanner after the blast, Al Falah University in Haryana's Faridabad on Wednesday said it has only a professional association with two of its doctors arrested in connection with the Red Fort blast and is anguished by the unfortunate developments.
While distancing itself from the terror-linked doctors, the university, in a statement, asserted that it is a responsible institution and stands in solidarity with the nation.
The forensics team has collected around 40 samples from the blast site, including two cartridges, live ammunition, and samples of two different types of explosives.
Preliminary analysis suggests that one of the explosive samples could be ammonium nitrate, officials said.
During the investigation on Monday, 360 kg of ammonium nitrate was recovered from Faridabad, where Dr Muzammil Ganaie and Dr Shaheen Sayeed, both connected to Al-Falah University, were arrested.
"The second explosive sample is believed to be more powerful than ammonium nitrate. Its exact composition will be confirmed after detailed forensic examination," an official said.
According to officials, the forensics team found the cartridges while inspecting the spot. Further investigation is underway to determine the nature of the explosives and how they were used in the blast.
As part of the ongoing probe into the module's activities, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday detained a preacher from Mewat in Haryana.
Maulvi Ishtiyaq, who has been brought to Srinagar, was staying in a rented house within the Al Falah University complex in Faridabad. It was from his home that police had recovered more than 2,500 kilograms of explosives, officials said.
Maulvi Ishtiyaq, who will be the ninth person to be nabbed in the case, is likely to be placed under arrest.
Senior police officers are personally supervising the security checks at interstate borders, including Ghazipur, Singhu, Tikri, and Badarpur. Vehicles are being checked randomly at markets, metro stations, railway terminals, and bus stands, officials said.
