The following is a favorite of mine. Tradition asserts that it was composed by Guru Gobind Singh after he had become separated from his family and Sikhs during a conflict. Pursued by enemies and in mortal danger, he had to spend time in the Machivara jungle alone before he could regroup with his Sikhs. This piece is said to have been composed whilst in the jungle. It is also rare in that it is one of the few compositions of the Dasam Granth written in Panjabi. Within it one can sense Guru Ji's humility and reliance on God.

I found this on the SGPC site regarding this incident:

After agreeing to leave Chamkaur as commanded by his Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh escaped into the night and the jungle surrounded by the enemy troops. In the dark the Guru was separated from his three Sikhs and left alone in the dense jungle. Guru Gobind Singh trudged through the jungle day and night, his clothes tattered and his feet blistered. Eventually the Guru reached the outskirts of Machiwara town and lay down to sleep in a garden in some bushes on the ground with a stone as his pillow. Here he was found by the three remaining Sikhs Daram Singh, Daya Singh and Man Singh.

Gurdwara Charan Kanwal, Machhiwara, Dist. Ludhiana is said to mark this spot.

mithr piaarae noo(n) haal mureedhaa dhaa kehinaa ॥

Please tell my beloved friend the plight of his disciples.

thudhh bin rog rajaaeeaa dhaa oudtan naag nivaasaa dhae hehinaa ॥

Without You, rich blankets are a disease and the comfort of the house is like living in a snake pit.

sool suraahee kha(n)jar piaalaa bi(n)g kasaaeeaaa(n) dhaa sehinaa ॥

Our water pitchers are like stakes of torture and our cups have edges like daggers. Your neglect is like the suffering of animals at the hands of butchers.

yaararrae dhaa saanoo(n) saathhar cha(n)gaa bhat(h) khaerriaa dhaa rehinaa ॥

Our Beloved Lord's straw bed is more pleasing to us than living in costly furnace-like mansions.
