Yes Tejwant ji, they were the Swedes and not the Soviets. And yes I agree that the Soviets were never Lily white pure but the scope for massive capitalist type induced corruption is rather limited.

As I have said in my earlier post, this would not have been possible because private sector was not willing to invest in infrastructure since the Industrial base in India was nonexistent and India had neither the income or resources to attract them. So the investors found India a high risk proposition in 50s but in 80s and 90s when Public Sector took firm roots private sector started clamouring for its share of the cake because it saw that investments could now be profitable.

Therefore India had to start massive steel plants and electrical generation manufacturing equipments with the help of countries of the Eastern Blockand only later could shift to private sector.

Finally, any system be it Capitalism, Socialism, Marxism or even Sikhism will be as good as its practioners make it. The time tested adage "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" is true for all the systems. Yeserday communism collapsed because of misuse. Capitalism is already showing signs of strain and tommorow it could be its turn. Even Sikhism is under tremendous strain thanks to its creative interpretation by interested parties!

India's or lets say that this sub-continents democracy was perhaps premature. Freedom and the democracy of these countries was used as a tool for personal gains by the political leaders.

I dont agree that Foreign investors didnt want India and thus India was "FORCED" to invest in steel plants and all...IT was THAT WAY and NEHRU WANTED it that way based on RUSSIAN SYSTEM. Nearly ALL of NEHRUS collegues/peers....destroyed their rich countries the same way...Tanzania..Kenya..Zimbawe..Indonesia....all these new leaders were non-aligned and all that self sufficient nonsense. RUSSIA had all that over emphasis on Defence/heavy state industry and had almost NIL for Private sector..thus even daily necessities like BREAD had LONG LINES at Bakeries...and a car had to be BOOKED for over 30 years !!..whereas in the USA..a person could go out and buy a Car as many times in a day...every hour if he so desired and had the money. Russia was obsessed with equality as a world power with the USA..when it had nothing...it squeezed its citizens blood to make weapons and missiles...hence the fall of communism and break up of USSR...

It was Nehru who forced India into steel plants and heavy industry..leading to India becoming BACKWARD when small countries like Malaysia Singapore LEAPED AHEAD on FOREIGN INVESTMENT...India had an english educated workforce...enough for investment....COMMUNISTS have always ahd enormous power in the corridors of delhi...USA much preferrd India as an ally but Nehru forced them to go for Pakistan as an ally when India refused to back away from ussr...

Yes Gyaniji,

The only difference is that when Communism and russia collapsed under its own weight, it did not disturb the rest of the world but when Enron, Lehman Bros, Arther Anderson, Merril Lynch and such institutions of "repute" collapsed (which had the audacity to sit on judgment and rate even sovereign countries) because of their financial mismanagement they took major countries of the world with them in the downward spiral. India just managed to escape partly because of its good luck and in part because of its prudent financial management.

So even the capitalistic system is not "fool"proof. If tommorrow, the major economies like Japan, Germany, UK, Cnada, China etc decide to withdraw their money from US then the US economy will crumble and fold up like a pack of cards.
