| | | | | "Haitians made pact with devil" Pat Robertson Haitians 'made a pact with the devil': Pat Robertson | The Australian Quote:
WASHINGTON: US evangelical preacher Pat Robertson has laid the blame for the devastating earthquake on the Haitians themselves, saying the country "swore a pact to the devil" to escape French rule in the 18th century.
"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," Mr Robertson, 80, said yesterday on his Christian Broadcasting Network show, The 700 Club.
Haitians were originally "under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil," said the former US presidential candidate.
"They said, `We will serve you if you will get us free from the French'. True story. And so the devil said, `OK, it's a deal'. Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other."
Mr Robertson contrasted Haiti with the neighbouring Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic "is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts etc," he said. "Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have . . . a great turning to God and out of this tragedy. I'm optimistic good may come."

| | | | | Re: "Haitians made pact with devil" Pat Robertson This comment Aus Desi ji took no time at all to come up. Pat Robertson made these remarks within less than 24 hours of the quake. The major news media picked it up and it caused a huge cry -- because Pat Robertson's chit is not clean. Moreover, every time there is a disaster he makes a similar comment. And the man has millions of followers, millions of dollars, as there are millions of people who feed on hatred. It is said that Jesus of Nazareth fed the multitudes with loaves and fish. Pat Roberson, follower of Jesus, feeds them hatred. Sometimes people would rather eat hatred. | | The following member appreciates Narayanjot Kaur Ji for the above message. | |

a very very rich man, who does not understand plate tectonics, casting judgement on the spirituality of a very very poor nation that has unfortunately been hit by a natural catastrophe. It is interesting too how convenient it is to forget history. Poverty stands in the way of recovery. Poverty contributed to the lack of resources today within the country of Haiti. But Haiti's poverty was even more entrenched because of policies in the 1950's and into the 70's when the US backed the corrupt Duvalier regime. Corruption, abuse of power, siphoning off aid for personal ends, and you get what you get. Foreign aid policy $$$$$$ depended on backing the Duvaliers, Father and Son, to ward off communist encroachments in the area. Later, US and World Bank policies $$$$$$ introduced the idea of turning Haiti into an export economy. This in turn lead to the abandonment of agriculture, followed by mass migration to towns for low-paying semi-skilled jobs in fledgling industries that never took off. Haiti's foreign debt accumulated under the Duvaliers was not forgiven.
Thus we see millions of poor people massed in cities living in conditions of poverty that are hard to imagine in a country that has less than 40 years to create an infrastructure or stable economic base. They have been sitting ducks for natural disasters for years. And Pat Robertson blames it on a pact with the Devil Not a devil but The Devil.
P/S He probably thought the Duvaliers were the cat's pajamas.
