Prayers not pints lay ahead for shut pub that dates back to Victorian era

A SIKH group's plan to turn an historic pub into a temple has won the backing of city council officers despite four letters of objection.
The Ramgarhia Sabha Sikh took over the former Sherwood Foresters in Normanton to transform it into a place of worship.
Now Derby City Council's planning department has backed the scheme ahead of a meeting tomorrow to decide the application.
Four letters of objection and one letter of support were received by the council.
Among the objections were suggestions the building should be put to different uses, including a military museum.
But a report from city council planners said the proposed use would "provide a locally-important building with a long-term use".

It added: "The proposed use of the building as a Sikh place of worship has been demonstrated to be compatible with the form of the building so no overriding objections are raised."
The 120-year-old building, in St Thomas Road, was originally targeted by developer Red Rose Care, which planned to knock it down and build a care home.
But local people raised objections and the company pulled out.
The property, built as a private house in 1885, was acquired by Burton brewer Ind Coope in 1889 and rebuilt as a hotel, then a pub.
More than 120 people signed a petition to save the building, saying it was part of Normanton's heritage.
