    when opening saved documents in word, the date automatically changes to
    today's date. why?

    This is an "access" forum not "word". But if I were you I would open your
    word doc and click view then - "View"-"Auto-text" and take the Tick off the
    auto-complete box.

    Date field is exactly for that, show today's date.
    Try to replace it with the CREATEDATE field.
