    Nice post Bhagat.

Antonia we should add that to our animals in gurbani thread. I notice many variations of the word used for cow amongst the shabads you quoted.

I did read a few early accounts of Europeans saying how Sikhs did not each beef but everything else but I think this was more majority influence on them than anything doctrinal.

Why not cows and bees? Milk and honey. Once I get a normal Internet connection/situation restored I will do that.

I think the cow is as important as any other animal. I don't think it has any spiritual, sacredness, significance or sense of purity unlike Hinduism, in Sikhism.

That is demonstrated starkly, as you really don't see cows wandering willy nilly in roads etc in Punjab.

I think the Dam Dami Taksal does have some reverence for cows, because in their Rehat Maryada there is something about not hurting a black cow.

Still don't see which shabad in particular says to abstain from cow meat or meat as such. Please read the shabads in full to gain full understanding of the saying..Please... Sikhi is above all these restrictions. Food is for body and Naam is for soul.... I only and only agree with Guru Nanak that food has nothing to with one's spiritual journey

    'Baba hor khana khushi khuar.
Jit khadhai tan pidiai, man mahi chalai vicar.'
    (Sri Rag, M. 1, pp.16-17)
(The other food taken for pleasure leads to misery. It causes pain in body, and evil thoughts in mind.)

This is it, eat what pleases your body, don't eat what causes you pain. Eat what you can digest easily, Don't eat what causes you digestion problems, and each individual is different.... absolutely different.

I personally give equal importance to Veg and Non Veg both and I regularly eat beef, pork, goat, chicken and fish meat, but never in my life I have felt that its either helping me or retraining me in naam simran.

Eating in moderation and according to your body is the key, and that's what Guru Nanak said. Read and Contemplate the Gurbani Khasla Ji....... Gurbani is to save us from all unnecessary rituals and beliefs.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
    Puninder

I honestly dont know if that is all of it... seriously how does the numbering go? Do I post from 1 till the next 1? It seems some shabads go weird like 1 2 17 then 1 etc...

This is a good topic for discussion. I'll start a new thread in my lunch break.

    Harkiran ji,

    Guru Fateh.

Pardon my ignorance but can you please elaborate the reason behind posting the shabad about meat?
    Thanks

Some factoids about the Indian 'Holy Cow'.

1.India is the largest beef exporter in the world. Brasil is number 3.
    http://beef2live.com/story-world-beef-exports-ranking-countries-0-106903

    2. The origin of cattle breeding in Brasil started from India when a region in Madhya Pradesh called Nelore started exporting its bulls to Brasil. In fact there is a cattle breed with the same name there.

    3. Almost all the cattle in the Americas for meat consumption can be traced back to India.

    Because Puninder Singh posted:
I was just responding to that... in agreement with what he said... That Gurbani actually doesn't say not to eat meat, but instead is speaking of the hypocrisy of those who abstain from it but know nothing about spirituality. In other words, simply being vegetarian won't make someone 'holier than thou' so to speak...

And even more ironic is that vegetarianism is staunchly pushed by some Sikhs, quoting the protection of the cow verses, but then they go and drink milk stating that is ok also because of those verses that state a cow is useless without milk. But then, they turn a blind eye to what happens to the baby cows... you know cows don't produce milk without being pregnant. What do they think happens to the baby cows (males in particular who are useless to the dairy industry) so they can drink their milk?? I believe this is the hypocrisy spoken of. Or one example anyway... Openly stating cows must be protected and then condoning the killing of countless baby cows while they consume dairy.

First of all my apologies, I mistook the connotation of the entire blog from one to another (sacredness of cows to meat consumption, but if you are living in India you can see some direct relation between the two). I was just trying to say in my earlier comment that verses quoted by blogger were in no way pointing that cows are sacred (and please read shabad in full for proper analysis, a verse is part of a shabad and its the full shabad which conveys the message in full). Cows have been used in the verses for examples, as it is easy to understand an analogy which is evident in everyday life. So neither any verse or full shabads talk about giving up of meat or make cow sacred in anyway.

Second, Harkiran Kaur Ji, you have rightly pointed out that Naam Simran is the key. It was hypocrisy and false rituals which were attacked by our Gurus as futile and waste of human energy. Gurbani very well gives us a clear path.... which wants us to focus on Naam Simran as base of everything. But it is also evident that many sub-sects (which is also against the basic principles of Sikhism) are preaching vegetarianism, special/particular baanas, and various other restrictions... but no one questions like Guru Nanak did - whether these external factors will help any of us in spiritual elevation. Guru Ji declined to wear Janeu because the thread would not help him in any way in his spiritual journey.

Khalsa ji, it is so much evident that Spiritual Elevation is the key to success on Spiritual Path but we are more focused on factors which are futile.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but Truth shall be told fearlessly.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
