Am I correct in thinking that the best way to start would be with nitnem and naam jap?

If yes, what advice can anyone offer? And if not, then what would you advise?

    Thanks

    Akiva ji,
Sikhism is a journey. Each Sikh's journey is unique as we are all different people with different personalities and therefore different things work best! Take time to explore the new to sikhism section and sikh sikhi sikhism part of the forum to learn more about the basics and then you can proceed with what works best for you. As you start exploring more feel free to post specific questions. The most important thing in Sikhi is understanding whats it all about!!
    Best wishes.
