THE surname Singh is the most common in the Blacktown district, a White Pages report has revealed.

The name has edged out the more tractional Smith, Williams, Brown and Jones for the top spot.

Taxi driver Michael Singh says that the Sikh temple at Glenwood was a contributing factor to the popularity of his surname.

“The temple motivates Sikhs or Punjabi people to live here,” he said.

“I know heaps of Singhs, nearly everyone I know is a Singh.”

Males in the Sikh faith are given the name Singh after baptism.

Gerrard Smith has lived in Blacktown since 1961. He attributes the popularity of the name Smith to English migration after the First Fleet.

“It would be popular in Blacktown because most of the people are migrants and among those who came from England there would be a high percentage of Smiths,” he said.

“It is one of the primary names of the world.

“If you’re in Wales, James is a popular name, if you’re in England, Brown tends to be popular but Smith is in the background everywhere.”

The origin of “Smith” comes from the old English language and refers to a metal worker.
