Sikh Youth To Hold Seminar On Murdered Punjab Human Right Activist

The BC Sikh Youth is holding a seminar on the life and murder of late human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and his efforts to highlight human rights issues in Punjab, India.

Khalra was kidnapped by police and then murdered by the Indian Security Forces for highlighting state abuse, extrajudicial killings of Sikh youth and Punjab police terror.

The seminar will be held at Simon Fraser University Surrey on June 4, 2010.

Khalra travelled to Canada in 1995 to ask Canadians to raise their voice against human rights abuses in Punjab. While in Canada he spoke to Canadian Sikhs and Parliamentarians about his findings. Because of his attempt to reach out to Canadians for help, he was targeted by the Indian Security Forces and extrajudicially killed.

For this reason, Sikh Youth say Khalra’s murder is a Canadian human rights story.

In 1995, Khalra travelled to Canada and spoke to Canadian Parliamentarians in Ottawa about his discovery of government documents evidencing the extrajudicial murder and illegal cremation of approximately 25,000 Sikhs. Upon his return to India, on September 6, 1995, Khalra was abducted by the Punjab Police and after 48 days in illegal custody, was extra-judicially murdered. His only fault: exposing human rights abuses in Punjab, India.

While six police officers were convicted and charged with his murder in 2005, other senior officers and officials in India responsible for his murder and the murder of thousands of others continue to enjoy impunity from justice.

The seminar will be presented by Satnam Singh Bains, a barrister from London who specializes in international human rights. Satnam has spent the last three years working in India on human rights litigation.

This seminar will provide an opportunity to learn about a relatively unknown chapter in Indian history – one which provides context to many of the discussions that take place in the Sikh Diaspora. The seminar will also highlight the importance of remaining vigilant to human rights issues, regardless of where they are in the world.

The event will take place:
Friday June 4th @ 6:30pm
SFU Surrey:
Room 5280
250 - 13450 – 102 Avenue
Surrey, British Columbia
