Shabad of the Week: Satguru Kia Fitki-a Mangi Thake Sansar

    This shabad is from sri Raag, and was composed by Guru Amardas ji, on Ang 34. The translation is by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa.

    There is a curious translation question to consider. Would Waheguru "curse" any part of his creation? Yet, the translation of this tuk says some are cursed.



    How could this be true? Could it be true? Let's think more deeply about the idea of being cursed. If feedback is energetic on this thread we can later on look at the Punjabi words for Curse and The Cursed.

    ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
    Sirīrāg mėhlā 3.
    Siree Raag, Third Mehl:

    ਜਿਨੀ ਪੁਰਖੀ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਸੇ ਦੁਖੀਏ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
    Jinī purkẖī saṯgur na sevi▫o se ḏukẖī▫e jug cẖār.
    Those who do not serve the True Guru shall be miserable throughout the four ages.

    ਚਾਰਿ throughout



    ਘਰਿ ਹੋਦਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ ਮੁਠੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥
    Gẖar hoḏā purakẖ na pacẖẖāṇi▫ā abẖimān muṯẖe ahaʼnkār.
    The Primal Being is within their own home, but they do not recognize Him. They are plundered by their egotistical pride and arrogance.

    ਹੋਦਾ is just, righteous, proper
    ਪਛਾਣਿਆ is acknowledge or recognize
    ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ false pride, conceit, egotism
    ਮੁਠੇ plundered, ruined




    ਸਤਗੁਰੂ ਕਿਆ ਫਿਟਕਿਆ ਮੰਗਿ ਥਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
    Saṯgurū ki▫ā fitki▫ā mang thake sansār.
    Cursed by the True Guru, they wander around the world begging, until they are exhausted.


    ਫਿਟਕਿਆ cursed, accursed, condemned Why would Waheguru without anger or fear "curse" anyone?
    ਥਕੇ weary
    ਕਿਆ become, be like, be in a state of


    ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
    Sacẖā sabaḏ na sevi▫o sabẖ kāj savāraṇhār. ||1||
    They do not serve the True Word of the Shabad, which is the solution to all of their problems. ||1||

    ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ solver resolver of all our affairs
    ਕਾਜ alone. standing alone or by itself, in the sense of unique, unparalleled


    ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਵੇਖੁ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
    Man mere saḏā har vekẖ haḏūr.
    O my mind, see the Lord ever close at hand.

    ਹਦੂਰਿ Presence, ever present, close by



    ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
    Janam maran ḏukẖ parharai sabaḏ rahi▫ā bẖarpūr. ||1|| rahā▫o.
    He shall remove the pains of death and rebirth; the Word of the Shabad shall fill you to overflowing. ||1||Pause||


    ਰਹਿਆ imbue, permeate, pervade
    ਪਰਹ remove, cleanse, erase, eradicate
    ਭਰਪੂਰਿ everywhere, in every situation, completely


    ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
    Sacẖ salāhan se sacẖe sacẖā nām aḏẖār.
    Those who praise the True One are true; the True Name is their Support.

    ਅਧਾਰੁ support, sustenance
    ਸਲਾਹਨਿ praise in this sentence those who praise the one who is true, they are true, and the true one is their support


    ਸਚੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
    Sacẖī kār kamāvṇī sacẖe nāl pi▫ār.
    They act truthfully, in love with the True Lord.

    ਕਮਾਵਣੀ perform, act, do

    ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
    Sacẖā sāhu varaṯḏā ko▫e na metaṇhār.
    The True King has written His Order, which no one can erase.

    ਸਚਾ a king
    ਵਰਤਦਾ pervades or imbues
    ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ erase ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ indelible, cannot be erased


    ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨੀ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥੨॥
    Manmukẖ mahal na pā▫inī kūṛ muṯẖe kūṛi▫ār. ||2||
    The self-willed manmukhs do not obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. The false are plundered by falsehood. ||2||


    ਮਹਲੁ house, mansion
    ਪਾਇਨੀ keep
    ਕੂੜਿ liars, those who are false and untruthful
    ਮੁਠੇ plundered, ruined
    ਕੂੜਿਆਰ This is the verb for liars, To lie, to be false or untruthful



    ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਗੁ ਮੁਆ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ॥
    Ha▫umai karṯā jag mu▫ā gur bin gẖor anḏẖār.
    Engrossed in egotism, the world perishes. Without the Guru, there is utter darkness.

    ਜਗੁ world
    ਮੁਆ die or perish
    ਘੋਰ darkness
    ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ignorance


    ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥
    Mā▫i▫ā mohi visāri▫ā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa ḏāṯār.
    In emotional attachment to Maya, they have forgotten the Great Giver, the Giver of Peace.

    ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਉਬਰਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਰਖਹਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
    Saṯgur sevėh ṯā ubrėh sacẖ rakẖėh ur ḏẖār.
    Those who serve the True Guru are saved; they keep the True One enshrined in their hearts.

    ਉਬਰਹਿ keep or save, preserve
    ਰਖਹਿ protect


    ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
    Kirpā ṯe har pā▫ī▫ai sacẖ sabaḏ vīcẖār. ||3||
    By His Grace, we find the Lord, and reflect on the True Word of the Shabad. ||3||

    ਪਾਈਐ obtain, get, keep


    ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
    Saṯgur sev man nirmalā ha▫umai ṯaj vikār.
    Serving the True Guru, the mind becomes immaculate and pure; egotism and corruption are discarded.

    ਨਿਰਮਲਾ pure and unblemixhed
    ਤਜਿ renounce, relinquish, abandon, discard
    ਵਿਕਾਰ wickedness, wrongdoing




    ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥
    Āp cẖẖod jīvaṯ marai gur kai sabaḏ vīcẖār.
    So abandon your selfishness, and remain dead while yet alive. Contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad.


    ਛੋਡਿ This word covers forms of selfishness and greed

    ਧੰਧਾ ਧਾਵਤ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
    Ḏẖanḏẖā ḏẖāvaṯ rėh ga▫e lāgā sācẖ pi▫ār.
    The pursuit of worldly affairs comes to an end, when you embrace love for the True One.

    ਧੰਧਾ entanglements as in worldly pursuits
    ਧਾਵਤ bring to an end, or restrain
    ਲਾਗਾ join, embrace


    ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
    Sacẖ raṯe mukẖ ujle ṯiṯ sācẖai ḏarbār. ||4||
    Those who are attuned to Truth-their faces are radiant in the Court of the True Lord. ||4||

    ਰਤੇ imbued, died, permeated
    ਉਜਲੇ radiant

    ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਮੰਨਿਓ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
    Saṯgur purakẖ na mani▫o sabaḏ na lago pi▫ār.
    Those who do not have faith in the Primal Being, the True Guru, and who do not enshrine love for the Shabad -

    ਸਬਦਿ believe ub gave faith
    ਲਗੋ hold, grasp, hold onto


    ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੇਤਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
    Isnān ḏān jeṯā karahi ḏūjai bẖā▫e kẖu▫ār.
    they take their cleansing baths, and give to charity again and again, but they are ultimately consumed by their love of duality.

    ਖੁਆਰੁ pleasures of
    ਭਾਇ love,, attraction


    ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਣੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
    Har jī▫o āpṇī kirpā kare ṯā lāgai nām pi▫ār.
    When the Dear Lord Himself grants His Grace, they are inspired to love the Naam.

    ਲਾਗੈ to hold
    ਪਿਆਰੁ dear, beloved


    ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਿ ॥੫॥੨੦॥੫੩॥
    Nānak nām samāl ṯū gur kai heṯ apār. ||5||20||53||
    O Nanak, immerse yourself in the Naam, through the Infinite Love of the Guru. ||5||20||53||
