renamed field in replicated backend database (gen_tempfield*0)

I am working with a replicated database I didn't design to make some minor
design and application changes. Today I discovered that in several of the
backend data tables fields have been renamed to gen_tempfield*0 with the o
incrementing depending on how many fields in the table have been renamed.
When I look at the table it appears there is no data in this field, but when
I look at the form that is using the table as a datasource, the data appears
to be there. With the form in design view, I get a missing source error for
those text boxes linked to the renamed fields. But when viewing the form in
normal mode, the data appears and new data is saved. At least one table had
this issue when I received the database, and this issue has appeared in one
table since I have been working with it. I am baffled as to what happened,
where the data actually is, and how I should recover these fields. Any help
    would be greatly appreciated.
