Sardar Inderjit Singh Monty, Member Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and Chairman of Guru Harkrishan Public School Tilak Nagar New Delhi along with London based Sikh journalist, Nirpal Singh Shergill, Chief Media Advisor of Raj Academy met together in London on 3rd July 2008 for a special meeting at the Raj Academy office London in the presence of Professor Surinder Singh. This special meeting was hosted to finalise the program details for the Raj Academy tour of India in October this year to join the celebrations for the 300th Gurgaddi Divas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The tour involves taking 30 Western born participants to India to show case the glory of Gurmat Sangeet with tanti saaj and nirdarith Raag based kirtan (as performed and practiced during the times of the Gurus).

Guru’s Shabad with Guru’s Instruments

The concept of Gurmat Sangeet has evolved and been defaced over the years due to a number of reasons, the concept of Gurmat Sangeet carried by Prof. Surinder Singh and his students of Raj Academy is embedded purely in the concept and philosophy of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. In simple terms this means that a shabad is to be sung or recited in the specified Raag at the top of that particular shabad and not to be substituted with a different Raag neither does it mean that the shabad is open to be sung to any other tune. The Raag specified in the title does serve a valuable purpose, a purpose which was the heart and soul of our ancestors and a purpose we have never been taught. One of the key goals held by Raj Academy is to help people to reconnect their heart and soul with the teachings and lives of our Great Gurus through understanding the shabad how Guru intended us to.

The tour takes the support, cooperation and blessings of many great Sikh personalities and dignitaries throughout the world. To name a few: Dr. Inderjit Kaur, Espanola USA, wife of the late Sri Singh Sahib Harbhajan Singh Yogi; Prof. Peter John, Vice Chancellor Thames Valley University UK; Dr. Christopher Batchelor, Head of London College of Music UK; Sardar Karta Singh, Head of Amrit Nam Sarovar Ashram in France; Hari Har Kaur from Germany; S. Tarlochan Singh, Member of Parliament; S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, former union minister India; Singh Sahib Tarlochan Singh, Jathedar Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Anandpur Sahib; S. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, President of World Punjabi organisation; S. Parmjit Singh Sarna, President Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. All of the above mentioned personalities as well as many other supporters have all extended their full cooperation to Raj Academy in helping to revive and restore the traditions of Gurmat Sangeet, this support is very much appreciated and required.

The group of 30 will carry with them the message of Gurus Shabad and the sacred instruments of the Sikh court, such as the Rabab of Guru Nanak Dev ji, Saranda and Jori of Guru Arjan Dev ji, Sarangi of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, Taus and Dilruba of Guru Gobind Singh ji; the aim of this tour is to revive the legacy of our Gurus through education by taking this powerful message to the people of India.
