AMRITSAR:

After a marathon meeting of Sikh clergy led by Akal Takht (highest Sikh temporal seat) Jatehdar Gyani Gurbachan Singh Thursday granted one more chance to former Akal Takht Jatehdar Professor Darshan Singh to appear on January 29 following the latter failed to appear before the Takht.

Talking to media persons, Jatehdar Gurbachan Singh said that Professor Darshan Singh was granted one more and last chance to prove his innocence before Akal Takht on January 29.

Earlier, last month on December 5 in an edict issued by Sikh clergy, Darshan Singh was given time to appear in person before the Akal Takht being a humble Sikh today (January 7) to accept religious punishment; otherwise Akal Takht may take extreme steps against his arrogance but today adopting lenient view, granted one more chance to him.

However, last month, Jathedar Gyani Gurbachan Singh had declared Darshan Singh Tankhayia (guilty for religious misconduct), when he did not bother to appear before Sikh clergy and returned from outside Akal Takht while leaving his file of clarification. Darshan Singh was demanding that Sikh clergy should hear his clarification in full public view, whereas, Sikh clergy were for in camera meeting.

Darshan was declared Tankhaiya due to his non appearance before the Sikh clergy at Akal Takht as he was allegedly guilty for uttering blasphemous remarks against the tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh at USA.

Professor Darshan Singh is a renowned Sikh scholar and well connected to Sikh community at various foreign countries and remained Jathedar Akal Takht during the peak days of militancy in Punjab in the year of 1986.

Whereas, Sikh clergy in a last month edict said that Darshan Singh had arrived at Akal Takht carrying ego in his head, since he had violated all the norms of Sikh religion during his appearance at sacred Akal Takht.
Edict also advised the Sikh community all over the world that Darshan Singh would not be entertained at anywhere in the world particularly in any Sikh shrine unless Darshan Singh appears at Akal Takht and accept punishment awarded by Sikh clergy.

Akal Takht sources today made it clear that if Professor Darshan Singh failed to appear before the Sikh clergy on January 29 with his clarification regarding his innocence, would be excommunicated from Sikh fold.
