It appears that when our database attempts to refresh a query, it hangs while
calculating. Calculating appears in the lower left corner of the window and
does not respond. We have to use task manager to exit the database and then
    reopen to continue.

Any ideas on what the cause may be?

There's only one practical way for us to know: Show us the SQL. Open the
query in SQL view and copy and past it here. Information on primary keys and
relationships would be a nice touch too. How are you refreshing it?

Also is this a multi-users database? Could more than one person be changing
    data at the same time?

Is the database split between a front end and back end?

What do the options say under Tools, Options, General tab for Name
AutoCorrect and Compact on Close? Under the Advanced tab for Default Open
    Mode and Default Record Locking?

    My recommendations:
    Name AutoCorrect - Off
    Compact on Close - Off
    Default Open Mode - Shared
Default Record Locking - Edited Record

Most likely caused by an infinite loop in which one event calls
another which calls another and eventually calls the first event. Not
necessarily at the level that you can debug the low level code but you
should be able to comment out a line of your code and try for effect.
