Accusing the DSGMC of levelling reckless allegations against him, senior lawyer H S Phoolka, who has been appearing for the victims in 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases, on Saturday claimed it was part of deep rooted conspiracy as some of cases were finally reaching a logical conclusion. The advocate had announced his withdrawal from all the riots cases following allegations of "personal benefits" levelled against him by a Delhi High Court judge and President of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC). However, he took back his decision after Akal Takth --the apex decision making body in the Sikh religion --intervened and asked him to continue appearing on behalf of the victims.
"No money whatsoever has been paid to me by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee for the expenses or for the fee," Phoolka said in an email.
He said that in the year 2000 when the proceedings of the Nanawati Commission commenced, a separate department was created in the office of DSGMC and two rooms in the office building were given to this department.
This office was controlled by the staff of DSGMC, he said.
Over 6,000 affidavits of victims were prepared in this office to be filed before the Nanavati Commission. He said he used to visit this office every day to render his free advice and services and to guide the people working in this office, said Phoolka.
DSGMC head P S Sarna had alleged that total Rs 1.9 crore was spent on Phoolka's team during the proceedings of Nanawati Commission.
"I am extremely upset by these reckless allegations because of the fact that since 1986 till today, I have not charged even a single penny from DSGMC or from anyone else for handling the cases of the 1984 carnage," said Phoolka.
Phoolka, who has been appearing on behalf of the victims in riots cases filed against senior Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, alleged these reckless allegations "are being made now, under a deep rooted conspiracy, at the moment when some cases of 1984 are finally reaching a logical conclusion".
He said that in 1985, he was paid a paltry amount of Rs 15,000 only by DSGMC.
Thereafter, not a single penny has been paid to him, neither has he ever demanded any money to fight the cases.
