I doubt that you can. Access generates an additional file (called a lock
file, I believe) when it is being used, and therefore requires read/write
permissions for the folder in which it is located.

CD's by nature are read only even the read-write type.

However you might (I have not tried it) be able to create a new database
on the computer's hard drive and then link to the tables so you can then
create a query in the new database based on the values on the CD. You will
not be able to use an update query.

The fact that the CD is read only should not stop your query from
    running....

If the query outputs data to another table, well...then of couse you can't
    do that....

The suggestion to use linked tables in the above case shoudl work....

Since you're here... we have a small favor to ask...

More people are visiting & reading SPN than ever but far fewer are paying to sustain it. Advertising revenues across the online media have fallen fast. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. Donating to SPN's is vote for free speech, for diversity of opinions, for the right of the people to stand up to religious bigotry. Without any affiliation to any organization, this constant struggle takes a lot of hard work to sustain as we entirely depend on the contributions of our esteemed writers/readers. We do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too... Fund our efforts and together we can keep the world informed about the real Sikh Sikhi Sikhism.
