KANSAS CITY, Kan. | The University of Kansas has been sued by a former associate vice provost for information services, who alleges that he was harassed and fired because of his religion and race.

Dilawar Grewal filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan. He is a naturalized U.S. citizen born in India and practices the Sikh religion. He alleges in the lawsuit that he was the target of racial and religious slurs, particularly after he was promoted to associate vice provost in August 2009.

He says he was ignored when he complained, and then was fired for filing the complaint.

Kansas spokesman Jack Martin told The Lawrence Journal-World that the lawsuit is baseless.

Former associate provost files discrimination suit

By Alex Garrison

A former associate vice provost for information services has filed a federal lawsuit claiming he was harassed on the basis of his religion and race during his time as a University employee.

Dilawar S. Grewal filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., on Friday. Grewal is a naturalized citizen born in India of Indian nationality and ancestry and a practitioner of the Sikh religion, according to the suit. The suit alleges Grewal was the victim of “open racial and religious slurs in the workplace” within Information Services and that his filing of complaints about this led to his termination in 2009.

Grewal alleges he was frequently and openly described by staff members as “looking like a terrorist” in several incidents.

The suit names the University, Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, Interim Provost Danny Anderson, Ola Faucher, director of human resources, and Julie Loats, director of IT, as defendants.

University representatives say the suit is baseless.

"Dr. Grewal was an at-will employee of the university and through the course of our defense we will demonstrate that his claims are unfounded. Since this matter is now in the judicial system, any further response will be reserved for our filings with the court," said Jack Martin, deputy director of University Communications, in an e-mail Tuesday.
