access 2000 creates a file with no extension of zero bytes that matches
the the first alphabetical folder name in list

This file can only be seen from access file open dialog box

Once viewed this file access hangs

Are you referring to this? :

    MyDatabase.mdb

And then right next to it is :

    MyDatabase.ldb

You will have to set some options in the Windows Explorer on the View menu
to even be able to see the file extensions.

If it turns out that this is what you're seeing, then that is OK. Access is
supposed to do that. the LDB file contains binary stuff that Access uses to
figure out who has what record locked, and why. When you need to transport
that database, say, for deployment, you only need to copy the .mdb file.
