A woman is Punjab's new finance minister

Chandigarh, Oct 20 : Less than a week after Manpreet Singh Badal was sacked as the finance minister of Punjab, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Wednesday named a woman, Upinderjit Kaur, to the post.
Kaur, who is over 70, is presently the education minister.

Manpreet, a nephew of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, was sacked from the Punjab cabinet after his threat to do away with subsidies and freebies like free power to farmers led to a confrontation with party leaders.

Punjab's new finance minister holds a in Economics and has been a professor on the subject at Patiala's Punjabi , 70 km from here.

She taught economics at Punjabi from 1965 to 1994. She also taught economics at Sydney University in 1974.

She has guided 26 students in the M.Phil (Master of Philosophy) and Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees in economics.

Upinderjit Kaur had also worked earlier as principal of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College.

Elected to the Punjab assembly in 1997, 2002 and 2007, she is the daughter of former Punjab minister and Akali Dal leader (late) Atma Singh. She represents the Sultanpur assembly constituency.

She became a cabinet minister in Punjab in February 1997 and held the portfolio of Technical Education and Industrial , Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Housing and Urban Development.

In the present government headed by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, Upinderjit Kaur held the portfolio of Education (School Education, important]Education and Languages), Civil law and has been made the finance minister, replacing Manpreet Singh Badal.

She is credited with enforcing the use of Punjabi in all government work in the state.

She has authored two books related to Economics, 'Development of Theory of Demand' and 'Sikh Religion and Economic Development'.

Her predecessor, Manpreet Badal, was dropped from the ministry last week owing to his recent statements regarding the Rs.70,000 crore debt on the state and his demand that the ruling Akali Dal do away with subsidies and freebies to take the state out of a debt trap.

He had claimed that the central government had extended a conditional offer of waiving nearly Rs.35,000 crore.

The statements brought Manpreet in direct confrontation with his first cousin and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Akali Dal president. Sukhbir is also the son of the chief minister.

In a minor reshuffle affected Wednesday, the portfolios of a few ministers were changed.

Sewa Singh Sekhwan will be the new education minister.

The charge of the information and public relations department has now been given to Sukhbir Badal, who already holds the charge of the home and sports departments

Gyani ji

I know nothing about Kaur ji. However, a smart woman politician knows who puts the ghee on her roti. Therefore she figures out early in her political career when to lead and when to follow, when to tow the line, when to be a figure head, when to speak and when to shut up, and whether she is just there as a place-holder until the real candidate is discovered and anointed. The same is true for the experienced male politician, but with one important difference.

By appointing a woman it can make it look as if the party has taken a great stride forward into justice and freedom for all. Some will think that the leadership has taken an important change in direction. However, politicos will often appoint a woman to a sensitive post in order to blow smoke. That way the opposition gets lost in the vapors and starts stumbling around. And they look bad if they criticize a woman, who may even be a revered mataji.

Now this Kaur is 70 years old. So you know that she knows how the game is played.

Now the time is to provide the public of punjab the real Swaraj. The hollow claims on the development front without doing any worthwhile work to provide relief to the people should be discouraged. Now the people expect from the Hon'ble Finance Minister the genuine facilities not false and inflated claims.
The infrastructure development in Punjab has come to stand still. Most of the projects still remain on paper, without even a brick having been laid.
The state Govt should utilize properly all funds meant for welfare schemes If we go through the details of expenditure made in the last four years under various schemes floated by the State Govt. we shall get alot of discrepencies in utilization of funds. It is the time for the Finance minister to provide nice economic policies so that the discontent among all sections of society like farmers, traders, employees, members of the industry and industrial workers can be removed. The people are raising their voice against the injustice but they are either being gagged or made to face police brutality.

O Nanak, when it rains in the month of Saawan, four are delighted:
the snake, the deer, the fish and the wealthy people who seek pleasure. ||1||
Dr. Upinderjit Kaurji,
Now we pray to almighty that the rain by your policies will provide help to all the creatures, as our state is agriculture based state. Kindly follow the footsteps and teachings of Guru Nanak Devji and provide the pleasure to all the creatures of the state, kindly don't provide shelter to wealthy people only. AS the shower of Saawan provide relief to all the creatures, we pray to almighty that you will be able to provide the ray of hope to all the citizens of Punjab.
With kind regards,
Rajneesh Madhok
