AJAPA JAAP (continuos repetition of Naam/ Waheguru) is the spiritual condition of a person when the Simran (repitition of Waheguru) goes on an auto pilot mode in your Surat (mind) and in your Hirdey (heart) as explained below. It means that Simran becomes a round the clock thing inside you, Simran doesn’t stop at any moment, it carries on and such a condition comes with Gurkirpa (God/ the guru’s blessing) and after a lot of Bhagti Kamai(meditation) or can also be...

I'm a nervous flyer and started to do nam jap, but now I'm not so sure if that was right.

The wonderful thing about the practice of the Divine Name is that there are no stringent regulations regarding its chanting — it can be handled by anyone at any time and at any place. If done with love, sincere feeling, determination and intense concentration, it removes the inner "filth" (egoism, ignorance, illusion, conditioning, Maya, etc.) enabling one to see All-pervading Truth within.

Yes -- the thread is wonderful Nam Jap ji! Ajappa Jap also good late at night, when you are in physical pain from an injury, or maybe arthritis, or perhaps sick with a virus, a fever. Naam Japna alleviates suffering -- all suffering.

Namjap ji
Above is a truthful statement of the one who experienced that state of mind, should we just chant Lord’s Name or do some thing first to deal with the trash society has loaded on us and soul is buried deep down?
Answer can show the way out if given depending upon the above Slok’s application.

PK70 ji,

Guru Ji guides us step-by-step. If anhad shabad was the ultimate, then why have 4 Laavan. 2 should have been enough. But no, the journey continues :-

Soohee, Fourth Mehl:

In the first round of the marriage ceremony, the Lord sets out His Instructions for performing the daily duties of married life.

Instead of the hymns of the Vedas to Brahma, embrace the righteous conduct of Dharma, and renounce sinful actions.

Meditate on the Lord's Name; embrace and enshrine the contemplative remembrance of the Naam.

Worship and adore the Guru, the Perfect True Guru, and all your sins shall be dispelled.

By great good fortune, celestial bliss is attained, and the Lord, Har, Har, seems sweet to the mind.
Servant Nanak proclaims that, in this, the first round of the marriage ceremony, the marriage ceremony has begun. ||1||

In the second round of the marriage ceremony, the Lord leads you to meet the True Guru, the Primal Being.

With the Fear of God, the Fearless Lord in the mind, the filth of egotism is eradicated.

In the Fear of God, the Immaculate Lord, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and behold the Lord's Presence before you.

The Lord, the Supreme Soul, is the Lord and Master of the Universe; He is pervading and permeating everywhere, fully filling all spaces.

Deep within, and outside as well, there is only the One Lord God. Meeting together, the humble servants of the Lord sing the songs of joy.

Servant Nanak proclaims that, in this, the second round of the marriage ceremony, the unstruck sound current of the Shabad resounds. ||2||

In the third round of the marriage ceremony, the mind is filled with Divine Love.

Meeting with the humble Saints of the Lord, I have found the Lord, by great good fortune.

I have found the Immaculate Lord, and I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. I speak the Word of the Lord's Bani.

By great good fortune, I have found the humble Saints, and I speak the Unspoken Speech of the Lord.

The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, vibrates and resounds within my heart; meditating on the Lord, I have realized the destiny inscribed upon my forehead.

Servant Nanak proclaims that, in this, the third round of the marriage ceremony, the mind is filled with Divine Love for the Lord. ||3||

In the fourth round of the marriage ceremony, my mind has become peaceful; I have found the Lord.

As Gurmukh, I have met Him, with intuitive ease; the Lord seems so sweet to my mind and body.

The Lord seems so sweet; I am pleasing to my God. Night and day, I lovingly focus my consciousness on the Lord.

I have obtained my Lord and Master, the fruit of my mind's desires. The Lord's Name resounds and resonates.

The Lord God, my Lord and Master, blends with His bride, and her heart blossoms forth in the Naam.

Servant Nanak proclaims that, in this, the fourth round of the marriage ceremony, we have found the Eternal Lord God. ||4||2||

Ek Musafir Ji,

The english translations given by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa are unsatisfactory. As PK70 Ji pointed out, it takes the enlightened person to translate correctly. Did you say that PK70 Ji ? Maybe Balbir Singh Ji can give us the correct translations of the Laavan.

Aad Ji,

This reminds me of a parable. A beduine traveller came to an oasis to let his herd of animals have their fluid fill. While resting for the night, he was told about a wise man who lived here. The traveller (Musafir) had a good reason to go and visit the wise man. As he was greeted into the wise man's tent, the Musafir humbled himself down and bowed in reverence. He told the wise man, "I follow my religion diligently. I have great faith in Allah. But my horses have been stolen before and I often wonder whether I should tie my horses or have faith in Allah."

Hearing this, the wise man told him to come back in the morning as he wanted to contemplate on the answer. In the morning, the Musafir came back for the answer. The wise man said, my answer is this : "Tie your horses, and trust in Allah."

Take your medicine and do your Naam Jap.
I take something for arthritis myself - content - Glucosamine Sulphate and Chondroitin Sulphate.

Re: Continuous Repetition of Waheguru
Nam Jap ji,
Pray for Truth for All!

I wasn't talking about myself in the particular.

This reminds me of a story too. Once on SPN someone said:

Some of us jap.
Some of us discuss.
And some of us jap and discuss.

Definitely it is wise to take your medicine too. One way or the other.

Re: Continuous Repetition of Waheguru
Namjap The topic is Ajappa Jaap. English translations fall short of explaining it.

I agree they do, whenever a translator try to translate word by word, Guru message is not conveyed fully and some time it is distorted. I agree with Ek musifir ajnabi when he says Gurbani is addressed different way to different people with different level of mind.. Ajap indicates a state of mind when it is completely lost in HIS thoughts, every thing stops, its hard to express through in words, I am million miles away from that; there is another example in this context. There is a shabad by Guru Nanak” pooja kijai Naam dhiaaeeai, bin Naam pooj n hoye” In that Shabad, Guru ji talks about His worship happening within. That also hints at special kind of state of mind. Regular people like me try to explain that kind of state of mind but without experience, it is impossible to word the gravity of that stage. And boasting talks about it, become laughable.
Namjap I strongly believe Gurbani is impossible to translate in its complete message, all translators showed their limitations, Sant Singh Khalsa is one of them.

Amjap ji First of all this, Shabad is not specially revealed for marriage ceremony. In Gurbani, the relation between the soul and the Creator is of wife and Husband. So Vivah( marriage) concept is taken to clarify the way of development of this pious relationship between God and the soul. Third Mehla also talks about this specific relationship

sUhI mhlw 3 ] jy loVih vru bwlVIey qw gur crxI icqu lwey rwm ] sdw hovih sohwgxI hir jIau mrY n jwey rwm

( In essence If soul wants her husband(God) should surrender to Guru and obey, forever Husband stays with her)
Following Guru Vaak clarifies this concept

squ sMqoKu kir Bwau kuVmu kuVmweI AwieAw bil rwm jIau
] kUVu kptu kmwvY mhw duKu pwvY ivxu siqgur mgu n pwieAw ]
Here KURM is used for Guru who arranges for union with God because without Guru, soul is prone to go astray.
vru pwieAw purKu AgMmu Agocru sd nvqnu bwl sKweI ] nwnk ikrpw kir kY myly ivCuiV kdy n jweI ]4]1] {pMnw 773}
Again Husband is HIM, once union occurs with HIM, separation never happens
So Guru ji refers to the same relationship of God and soul, now come back to the Shabad you quoted. It starts with first need of the soul to walk on that path, it is Guru who inspires soul lost in worldly affairs to turn to HIM only. Bhai Veer Singh defines (Shri Guru Granth sahib Kosh Page 428) “Parvirti as surt turning towards Naam after abandoning “Prvirti and nvirti(indifference approach towards world to realize God) Guru does that for the soul as a first step.

Namjap ji Guru ji has answered my question. In a way you were also right but going direct to “Jap” practice only, can be taken over as ritual by habit if SURT is not given and cleaning the mind is not done. As I said, Without Practicing Japji, Sikh dies spiritually, means if teachings in Japji Sahib are not practiced, Sikh fails to touch the taste of spirituality, means to over come ego and understanding His Ordinance and following the Guru on day to day life are mandatory for spirituality, mere talks take no where., so internal Surt and all trash Society buries the soul with must be cleaned. Here is Guru vaak you quoted
sUhI mhlw 4 ] hir pihlVI lwv privrqI krm idRVwieAw bil rwm jIau ] bwxI, bRhmw vydu, Drmu idRVhu pwp qjwieAw bil rwm jIau ] {pMnw 773}
