Harkrishen Kung may be retired but his involvement in Hamilton's Indian community keeps him busier than ever.

The former dairy farmer and father of four has been awarded a Queen's Service Medal for his services to the Indian community.

His involvement with the New Zealand Sikh Society has seen him hold positions from president to treasurer, but the most running around he has done was during his time as the society's marriage celebrant.

As a founding member of the Sikh Society, Mr Kung was instrumental in the construction of New Zealand's first Sikh temple at Te Rapa in 1977.

He sees the temple as a great legacy, as it's not only a place for worship but also where the Indian community can get together for celebration and activities.

Involvement in the community runs in the family – Mr Kung's father was president of the Sikh Society in 1968 when the land was bought for the temple's construction.

Mr Kung has been president many times since 1976 and will stand again this year for the position.

He is also a longstanding member of the New Zealand Indian Association and the Indian Cultural Society of Waikato.
