Gurfateh Jeo! I shared some of these videos on Facebook just now, but I am not sure if it is permissable to depict Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji in animation. Please advise..

Sewadarmi ji

I don't have the answer specific to your question. But these videos, and similar, have been out for a while. There has been no controversy that I am aware of. Sikhnet for example has published Guru Nanak animations to its pages in the past without any controversy.

Thanks for replying Narayanjot Bhainjeo :happykaur:

I emailed our very learned, knowledgeable and highly respected Gyaniji late last night and his reply this morning was that no, we should not depict Guru Nanak Dev Ji in animation or in movies etc. I have now removed these videos from my Facebook page. I am sure you will agree, that just because a website like Sikhnet has published this, it does not make it right. I viewed 4 of the videos last night and had a mixed reaction, because even though this medium is certainly engaing for little ones who can easily grasp the meaning of the Sakhis via animation, I felt uncomfortable in many scenes, especially one where our Revered Guru Ji is depicted laughing like one of those Ha Ha Ha Ha, Mogambo Khush Huah kind of laughter. Just saying..

Sewadarmi ji

Thanks for contacting your Gyani ji. Our Gyani ji Jarnail Singh Arshi is caring for a very sick relative and I hesitated to contact him on this. I too have mixed feelings about these videos. But posted them anyway.

What I will do: refer this matter to our mentor/leader section and see what they have to say.

In following video, they have shown Guru Anagad Dev Ji as clean shaven. Most of the Sakhis shown in these video are far from gurmat and closer to fairy tales.

Guru Nanak dev ji's Sikhi is not based on fairy tales but in fact on 'truth' or reality.

Is there anything in Sikh Rehat Maryada or Hukamnama on this regards whether we can show Sikh Guru in animated movies? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Sikh Guru Nanak's Teachings on Animated Video (Chief's Forum)

Janpreet ji

All the stories of Guru Nanak are based on various janamsakhis - and all of these are more or less truthful. Many were written many years after the life of a particular Guru. Is there a rule about this that is 100 percent without error? The rule would have to be to tell absolutely NO stories about the lives of the Gurus because NONE of them can be proved without a doubt. None of them are based on eye-witness accounts.

All that we can depend on for the lives of some of the Gurus and not all are the vaaran of Bhai Gurdas ji.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=31597
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=31597

Under these circumstances there could then be one and only one acceptable result. To avoid any and all possibility of mistake, NO stories of the lives of the Gurus should ever be told. What are the chances of that happening?

Regarding animations: I will check the Sikh Rehat Maryada, but don't forget that it was written in 1925 (officially adopted February, 1945) when computers and animations had not yet been invented. If we find that all pictures of Gurus are forbidden by SRM, then we will have the answer.

Logically animations would go out the window. If pictures are forbidden, then animations which are nothing more than animated pictures are verbotten. But all the pictures in this forum, on walls of gurdwaras, and in books, and on the Internet will also need to be expunged. However, if pictures are not forbidden by the SRM, where does that leave us?

Animations are a combination of stories and pictures. If the stories go, animations will have to go. If pictures are forbidden, animations will have to go. So what rule should we apply here?

Thanks to Soul-jyot ji who sent me a pm to provide the official date for adoption of the Sikh Rehat Marayada.

Narayanjot Kaur Ji

Any 'Sakhi' which is not as per 'Gurmat' should not be promoted. No one knows how authentic these 'Sakhis' are, who wrote these 'Sakhis', when it was written. Original 'Sakhi' might have been transformed into something else as it was passed from generation to generation.

We should only drive knowledge from Gurbani as it was written and authenticated by Guru themselves.

'Deh' (Human Body) or Pictures have no significance in Sikhism. We should only bow to Akal Purakh or 'Shabad Guru' (Knowledge). Majority of Sikhs have accepted taking 'matha' to pictures of Guru.

We Sikhs have already accepted pictures and now we are so close to accept animated Sikh gurus. What's coming next ? A real being playing character of Sikh Gurus in the movies? I feel it's time for Sikhs to draw line before it's too late otherwise we might end up back into fold of Hinduism.

Sikhs want Guru’s animated video taken off YouTube

TNS
Ludhiana, July 28
Members of the Sikh community have strongly condemned an animated video of Guru Nanak Dev on YouTube and demanded its immediate withdrawal along with an apology from its producers.

Followers of the religion and many others have termed the video as derogatory and hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikhs. A brainchild of film and television studio Rajshri Productions, the video is online under the Rajshri Kids Channel banner. The channel mentions on YouTube: Guru Nanak was a man of God who loved people and taught them the path of true faith and worship. Millions follow his teachings in their lives. This animated video will help children imbibe the sublime values that the great Guru taught.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said that the film had hurt the religious sentiments of the community. “Nobody has the right to portray the Sikh Guru non-seriously and hence they should withdraw the film immediately,” he said, adding that they would initiate legal action against Rajshri Productions. “We will constitute a committee to look into the matter and submit its report. The company will be asked to seek forgiveness from the SGPC,” Makkar said.
The video has also created a global furore and a widespread condemnation campaign has kicked off on various social networking websites, including Facebook and Twitter.
