Not sure if im posting this in the right section but i've got a question not sure if its already been asked.

Why do men and women sit seperately in the gurdwara are we not all equal?

We should technically have one area, and not have seperated areas for men and women, just something that happened.

Preeti

Just to add onto Lionchild's comment.

I think it all down to the Gurdwara committee etc. For example, first women sit on the left side, then they move it to the right, but don't have a problem in the langar hall as we can sit wherever we want!!!

When I've been to Gurdwara's in India, I sit with my husband, as there's no seperation there.

Re: Gurdwara

Preeti ji,

This is not a religious issue but a Social and Cultural one. Generally in a social as well as a religious gathering one feels more comfortable sitting in familiar surroundings or one could say among ones own species. People gather at religious institutions from different backgrounds and thus are not all broadminded.

Take an example of a you are sitting among males in a religious gathering if some one sat next to you with his knee touching you because of lack of space or otherwise or some one walked past you and touched your shoulder by accident on purpose. You will soon begin to feel very uncomfortable compared to the same action by one of your own species. You may accept it, but your family member or your partner or even a member of your community who may find that unacceptable.

Conversely, a male member finds space between your mum and yourself and wedges in between and pushes everyone to make space. I am sure at some point you or your family member will reject this action. But if a female member did that, you will probably not mind as much.

I am sure you are getting the picture. But that does not mean that as an individual you cannot and should not do it. It is your cue.

I do not believe it is a Gurdwara committee issue. Common sense should prevail here.

No offence to you MKAUR1981.

Sat Sri Akal Hai Bhi Sach.

No offence taken Veer ji. The reason why I said it was down to the committee is that it seems to be an issue here as to where women sit and where men sit. (Well at the Gurdwara I go to anyway). Many a times I have been told to sit on the other side, as I am sitting on the men's side.

.....Funny, no one gets offended in India if a man accidently knocks a bibi's goda!
