Implementing with physical force its “tradition“ of not allowing any discussion on the annual budget, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Wednesday approved Rs 508.7-crore proposals for 2010- 11 by voice vote. Soon after SGPC general sec- retary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur delivered the budget speech, Jagdish Singh Jhinda, chief of the ad hoc Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, stood up to demand a debate on the proposals.

However, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and his sup- porters were swift to term it an act detrimental to “marya- da (religious code)“ and sum- mon the task force to physi- cally remove Jhinda from the hall.

The act prompted a walkout by the entire opposition, in the absence of which the pro-man- agement members passed the budget by voice vote.

The pro- Badal SGPC members also brushed aside a joint note of dissent submitted in advance by a group of members led by Manjit Singh Calcutta.

The note had raised objec- tions over various expenditures, proposed utilisation of previous savings to fill the income- expenditure gap, and the “lack of transparency“ in earmark- ing funds for various purposes. Even as the opposition expressed alarm over the SGPC plan to “eat into its assets“, the management sought credit for the fact that the budget had exceeded the previous year's expenses by Rs 59.81 crore.

In his budget speech, Bhaur highlighted the plan to import an advanced printing machine from Germany and the allot- ment of sufficient funds for Guru Granth Sahib World University at Fatehgarh Sahib and Miri-Piri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Shahbad Markanda.

As usual. Nothing new done by SGPC. They had always supressed the opositions voice by the goonda force or the so called task force. If we really want a change at SGPC than try your luck in the coming elections, if held.
