ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਲੋਭਾਣੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥
ਆਪਣਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਹਿ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਨ ਚੇਤਹੀ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਣੀ ॥੧॥

Manmukhs, who do as per their will and do not live as per bani, do not recognize the worth of His praise/sift-salah and remain engrossed in maya and are always busy in pleasing others to attain their motives for self gratification and other sensual pleasures and as a consequence remain deprived of the essence of the God. They lead a life full of vices and hence are subjected to pains and anguish as they are running after the transitory pleasures.They do not engage themselves in remembering the almighty and do not engage them selves in the most fruitful profession of praising the ever-stable and unchanging ‘sat’. They always spend the live in vices and there is no salvation for them and ultimately they become a ‘spiritual dead.’[Various commentators have described the state of manmukhs. Gurbani .org states Manmukhs as:

Quote ‘A Manmukh is a material being (egoistic or unenlightened person) as opposed to a Spiritual Being, who does not have natural inclination for Gurmat and Spirituality - he is the mind-willed. People with such materialistic outlook — referred to as Manmukhs in the Gurbani — assert that everlasting happiness is attainable only in acquisition of sense-objects, persuing passions, etc. In other words, a Manmukh is ruled by his conditioned and corrupt sense-blind mind instead of Soul Consciousness. Simply stated, a Manmukh is an ego-being with the following faults: lust, anger, greed, material attachment, pride, envy, stubborn mindedness; along with numerous variations of these. Having conditioned (polluted or filthy) consciousness, he has no understanding of the Naam, Shabad, Hukam(Will), Self, God, Spirit or the Sat Guru. Consequently, he has no understanding of the ultimate purpose of life, his relationship with God, and the Way of God (Gurmat). In this madness and illusion and "I-am-ness", he cultivates the life of a faithless cynic called Saakat — an unwise and an untrue being’ Unquote][1]

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਦਾ ਭਜਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥


One should instruct one’s mind so that it is in the sanctuary of the God. It is obtained through Gur shabad/bani when the Guru shabad get inscripted on their mind and the Almighty comes and dwells in mind and one gets the true essence of the God. One does not forget the God when it happens. It is advocated that Guru shabad should, therefore, be contemplated seriously and the same should be lived up to I e. one should live in Gurbani. [Many commentatiors have stated about shabad as follows: Quote ”Shabad has two connotations - the written form and the sound aspect. Written form is worldly, as it can be read, spoken and studied. The sound aspect is related to hearing, voice, tune, concentration, awareness and understanding. Hearing has direct link with consciousness (surti). Consciousness belong to the spiritual field and is a ray or speck of the super-consciousness which is God. One who hears with devotion and bears it in his heart, gets absorbed in meditation easily - sunye lage sahaj dhian.’ AndBhai Gurdas, the scribe of Guru Granth Sahib, in his psalms which have been blessed by Guru Arjun Dev as the key for understanding of Gurbani, categorically mentions that the form of the Guru is his shabad and not his body. Here are few quotations from Bhai Gurdas’s work:

Gur moorat gur shabad hai, sadh sangat mil amrit vela. [Var 24, stanza 11.]

Guru’s form is his shabad, which can be obtained in early morning holy congregation.

Gur moorat gur shabad hai, sadh sangat samsar parwana. [Var 24, stanza 15.]

Guru’s form is shabad.The shabad and sadh sangat is one and the same.

Gur moorat gur shabad sun, sadh sangat asan nirankari - [Var 11 stanza 2.]

Listen to the Guru’s shabad as the Guru’s form. Sadh sangat is the seat of God.

It is repeatedly stated in Gurbani that shabad is the Divine Light, i.e. Guru, and not the body. Idol worship is decried. Guru Arjun Dev has stated that adoration other than that of God is homicidal. Guru Gobind Singh in one of his compositions has questioned as to how can a dead and spiritless entity bestow any favour? - Jo jee hot, tau det kachhu tohi. He even declared that those who call him as Almighty would go to hell. Bhagat Kabir has very forthrightly said that an idol, if it has any power, should destroy its carver who trampled upon it during its chiselling:

pakhan ghad ke moorat kini, deke chhati pao
jeh eh moorat sachi hai, to gharanhare khao.

Shabad is connected with surti which has to be attuned to the melody of shabad to realise God - Shabad surat bhav sagar tarie. In this process, shabad becomes the Guru and surti absorbed in its melody is its follower (chela) - Shabad Guru, surat dhun chela. To achieve union of surti with Gur-shabad, we have to continuously remember God, submit to His Will and try to mould our life to truthful living. This is not a simple affair. The Guru, in his mercy, has suggested an easy way to make a beginning towards this end in the following shabad and its rendering in English:

a. Antar Guru aradhna, jehva jup gur naon.
b. Netri Satgur pekhna, sarvani sun-na gur naon.
c. Satgur seti ratia, dargeh paiye thaon.
d. Koh Nanak kirpa kare, jisno eh vath de.
e. Jug mein utam kadhie, virle kei ke.

Remember God with utmost attention, love and devotion in mind (which should be kept under control and not allowed to wander). Utter God’s Name with the tongue (so that it could be heard).
Visualise God’s presence within and around us. Hear God’s Name being uttered with faith and obey His Command. Unquote] [1] [Pause]


ਇਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਪੁਤਲਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਸਟੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੨॥

Manmukh's physical body and mind thus become the puppet of maya and his mind always dances to the Tunes of maya and further they develop egotism or alternately they are not able to sub due the ego that is stated to be a disease. They remain trapped in the cycle of birth and death and have no honor in this world of human affairs. On the other hand those who are engrossed in the praises of the Almighty enjoy the spiritual pleasure and remain in the state of bliss as the Jot of such a devotee becomes merged into the Jot of the God.[2]

ਸਤਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤਿ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਜੋ ਇਛੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਤਪੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥

The sewa of the God always lead to spiritual bliss to the devotees. Such a devotee gets as that he wishes for as he is spiritually at higher stage. Guru’s sewa is his jap, Tap and sat for such devotees. He establishes the essence of Lord in his mind by constant practice of simran in his mind. Such a gurmukh is entitled for the state of bliss and he is happy meeting his Lord in this way that keeps him spiritually satisfied.[3]

ਜੋ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੪੫॥

Those who remain the sanctuary of the God are spoken of very highly by the Guru sahibs.They are also eligible for the praises at the Lord’s door and on account of the gift of the blessings of the stable mindedness they get absorbed into the one by whom they were created i.e. the God. However, by the Grace of the Almighty it is obtained . Further even the meeting with such Gurmukhs is obtained by His grace. One cannot acclaim that one can meet such a Gurumukh.[4]
