Recently i came across a collegue of mine with the title 'Kaur' attached to her name . On inquiring i came to know that she had not accepted Amrit how ever had been attaching Kaur to her name . Her family is Sikh . I still have this question if a man cannot be a Singh for the namesake how can a woman be a Kaur ?

As learning starts in the womb and the teacher- the nurturer is the mum, then the fetus is a Sikh- a student. The name Kaur or Singh as a Sikh is just an identity of the household one is born into for the legal purposes as in the birth certificates. In the US one has to give the name of the child to the hospital within a few hours so they can issue the paperwork.

On the other hand one becomes a Sikh through practicing Gurmat ideals but born a Sikh through traditions. One may choose to change his/her name later on if one changes to a different way of life or a religion.

Singh & Kaur are gateways to Sikhi. One has the freedom to walk out of them anytime. If Singh and Kaur were prerequisite to be Sikhs then Harmander Sahib would not have 4 doors to invite all mankind irrespective of anyone's hue, creed or faith nor would we have peoples' hymns from other religions in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

All children born into Sikh family should have “Singh and Kaur” with their names. It is an initial introduction of the background of the children; who is really a Sikh, only Prabh ji knows but walking on Guru Path should be continued.

Re: Can a person be a Kaur or a Singh without having accepted Amrit ?

Simple really....
Just as every CHILD is "guaranteed" a place in School...and can be admitted to any school...
in reality only SOME will go on to graduate at...Junior high..High..College..Uni..PHd..etc etc all different levels of achievement...and with different GRADES of excellence...
The Level of achievement depends on PERSONAL dedication and commitment.
SAME here....any one can be born a SIKH...and have the "documentary name" of Singh/Kaur whatever...even without being born a SIKH !!!
BUT...it takes personal effort...dedication..commitment to be a SIKH in real terms..then on to becoming a SINGH/KAUR in real terms..and further still to becoming a KHALSA in real terms...a lifetime of EDUCATION (SIKH)...learning...UN-learning..and RE-LEARNING...the education goes on....until LIFE comes to an END !!
