Search on the Internet suggests there are 40 varan. However, there are
passages which are not included in the 40 varas. What is the proof that

there are just 40 varan?
The specific passage that I am referencing is:

tosh ji

This is interesting because at searchgurbani.net the Chapter Index for Bhai Gurdas vaaran shows 41 vaaran. At this link:
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=23822
Vaaran Bhai Gurdas :Vaar41Pauri:SearchGurbani.com

I tried searching using your Gurmukhi vaar above and was not successful. Wish you luck.

Mystery solved - found the passage in Kibit 801, not in Vaaran.

Re: Missing Passage in Varan

Dear Aad0002 Jio,
Gurfateh.
Regarding your query on Bhai Gurdass and his 40 or 41 vaars ????

The Original Bhai Gurdass Ji ( Scribe of the Kartarpuri Bir..AAd Granth of Sri Guru Arjun Ji Sahib....and Mama Ji of Guru Arjun Ji..) wrote 40 Vaars.

Somehow ??? mystery of mysteries.... some one ADDED a 41st Vaar to the 40 Vaars of Bhai Gurdass. This happened when the Printing Press came into being.
Sikhs being good for "sleeping while the sun shines" ( while others amke the proverbial Hay !!)...kept on sleeping and saying 41 vaars of Bhai Gurdass....UNTIL one fine day..some one woke up and said...HEY...this 41st Vaar is about GURU GOBIND SINGH JI and His Khalsa.... so how could it be the work of the Bhai Gurdass who died LONG BEFORE Guru Gobind Singh ji !!!!
The ready made answer..Gharriah gharriah jawaab ??..OH this 41st Vaar is by...none other than.....drum roll... BHAI GURDASS SINGH...or Bhai Gurdass Ji the SECOND !!!! DRUM ROLL....and the Sikhs went back to SLEEP !! No proof whatsoever about "SINGH"..as well..just assumed he must be a SINGH since he is post Guru Gobind Singh Ji.....
Fast Forward..Age of the Internet arrived....people just refused to accept any and all "bull"...ESPECIALLY when it was found that the 41st Vaar was SO RACIST, ANTI-ISLAM and BLATANTLY LYING....just a tiny example..it declares that the KHALSA DESTROYED MOSQUES, STOPPED the NAMAAZ , BANNED Circumcison...and killed Muslims. Such a Blatant LIE....as the Khalsa did no such thing..in fact the Khalsa and its Gurus BUILT MOSQUES !!! Guru hargobind Ji built a mosque..Maharaja ranjit singh gave huge amounts to mosques...not a single incident of any mosque destruction even durign the Banda Singh times. Sikhs weere lulled into a deep slumber just by the inclusion of certain couplets like...Waho waho Gobind Singh aapeh Gur chela....Peevoh Amrit Khandeshaar hoveh janam suhela..etc which were sprinkled among couplets of naked HATRED and RACISM agaisnt the Islamics.
The Cat was now out of the bag..well and proper...research shows that this poem is actually by a BRAHMIN living after Guru gobind Singh ji...and his "sikh" name is Koer Singh.....
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=23822
The 64 Billion Dollar question remains..WHY wasnt his real name revealed earlier...why hsi spurious vaar was SURREPTIOUSLY ADDED to the Bhai Gurdass's 40 vaars as the 41st Vaar..and who did this ?? ( Culprits are the BOOKSELLERS cum PUBLISHERS who had a monopoly on ALL Sikh literature/even Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji birs etc etc..all this while ) Looks like a "conspiracy theory" doesnt it.... well it happens to be the TRUTH....and as they say TRUTH is stranger than Fiction...

This is fascinating stuff. I did not actually read the Vaar, but just went to the index to see how many vaars were listed, before looking for the missing pauree. Then saw 41 and just decided to ask tosh ji whether what I saw sounded right to him.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=23822

Well, he found he was in the wrong place. And now you are telling this amazing story. The context for the extra vaar could be a book I am betting.

Thank you,
Antonia

Gyanni ji

Well I went back and read the first 4 paurees from Vaar 41 -- AND YOU ARE RIGHT! IT IS CRAZY. So what is it doing in the collection of vaars without any editorial comment on this? And you have the wittiest way of explaining the problem. Thanks again.

Here is something I found on the Internet about that.

A bird’s eye view of Sikh history shows that from the very beginning of the Sikh movement there have been some who worked to interpolate into the holy verses of the Sikh Gurus. Quite a number of versifiers had cropped up even during the lifetime of the Gurus who would write verses in the style of the Gurus and would mislead the Sikhs. Even in Guru Arjan Dev’s compilation of the holy scripture – Adi Granth Sahib, there appear verses carrying Mahalla sixth and seventh in some birs. The fact is that the sixth and seventh Gurus never wrote a single line for inclusion into the holy Granth.

From the very onset, Brahmanical influences have always remained hostile to the Sikh movement. A few instances would show how with this influence on people in general, some subverts were at work to subvert the movement from within. The move was so subtle that truth could not be sifted for long. Perhaps it took a century or two to find out. For instance, there was one Koer Singh who wrote Gur-Bilas Patshai Dasmi in 1751, 43 years after the demise of Guru Gobind Singh. He was a Vaishnav Hindu – Bishan Chand. He admits that he was a Sikh only by name. He invented a myth that before the creation of the Khalsa Guru Gobind Singh worshipped mythical Hindu goddess Durga and that he was blessed by other mythical gods and goddesses of the Hindus. He propagated that all Gurus of the Sikhs were in fact, avtars – incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This is pure blasphemy as we know from the study of Gurbani. He did not stop short there. He wrote a ballad (vaar) in praise of Guru Gobind Singh under the pen name Bhai Gurdas Singh and had it added as vaar 41 of Bhai Gurdas who was contemporary of the Sikh Gurus (from third to sixth Guru). This vaar 41 mislead the Sikhs in believing that Khalsa was created by Guru Gobind Singh to put an end to the religion of Prophet Mohammed. This goes against the basic principles of the Sikh Gurus (ref: Pauri 16 and 17).
