Lets ask WAHEGURU to teach us to pray

Please teach me, Lord ...
I want to know
Exactly how to pray.

I need some words
Which ones are right?
Please tell me what to say.

I've bowed my head
I have knelt down,But ...
should I be upright?

I've closed my eyes,
I've raised my hands,Or ...
should I fold them tight?

Do I stand up?

Should I sit down?
Dear Lord ... what do you like?

Are lights turned on
Or are they off?Maybe ...
candle light?
Wear my glasses?

Take them off?
Be at my desk or table?
Should I whisper?
Speak out loud?

Do I quote the holy books?
What do you think about the time?
Do You prefer the dawn?

Should I pray fast,
Or keep it slow?
Better short ... or long?

I'm new at this
What are the rules?
I want to do it right.

How do I know
You'll even hear
That I am in Your sight?

And while I sat there quietly,
Waiting for some sign,
I heard a gentle voice say,

"Oh, dearest child of mine ...
Do you think I really care
About the time of day,
Or whether you are standing up,
Or kneeling when you pray?"

"I don't care about your posture,
Or about the place you choose;
Just open up your soul to me,
I have no other rules.

Tell me what is in your heart,
And tell me what you seek;
Tell me of your sorrows,
And of those things that made you weak."

"Speak to me in private
About what concerns you most;
I know about your good deeds ...
You have no need to boast.

My child, you don't need lessons,
Just talk to me each day;
Tell me anything you want, dear child,
Anyone can pray."

Really nice poem and very true...as long as you wanna open urself up to God and develop a close relationship to him thats all that should matter really

कोई पड़ता सहसाकिरता कोई पड़ै पुराना ॥
Koī paṛṯā sehsākirṯā koī paṛai purānā.
Some read the Sanskrit scriptures, and some read the Puraanas.
ਕੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
कोई नामु जपै जपमाली लागै तिसै धिआना ॥
Koī nām japai japmālī lāgai ṯisai ḏẖiānā.
Some meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and chant it on their malas, focusing on it in meditation.
ਅਬ ਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
अब ही कब ही किछू न जाना तेरा एको नामु पछाना ॥१॥
Ab hī kab hī kicẖẖū na jānā ṯėrā ėko nām pacẖẖānā. ||1||
I know nothing, now or ever; I recognize only Your One Name, Lord. ||1||
ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਹਰੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਵਨ ਗਤੇ ॥
न जाणा हरे मेरी कवन गते ॥
Na jāṇā harė mėrī kavan gaṯė.
I do not know, Lord, what my condition shall be.
ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਲਾਜ ਪਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
हम मूरख अगिआन सरनि प्रभ तेरी करि किरपा राखहु मेरी लाज पते ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ham mūrakẖ agiān saran parabẖ ṯėrī kar kirpā rākẖo mėrī lāj paṯė. ||1|| rahāo.
I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary, God. Please, save my honor and my self-respect. ||1||Pause||
ਕਬਹੂ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਊਭਿ ਚੜਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਬਹੂ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਲੇ ॥
कबहू जीअड़ा ऊभि चड़तु है कबहू जाइ पइआले ॥
Kabhū jīaṛā ūbẖ cẖaṛaṯ hai kabhū jāė paiālė.
Sometimes, the soul soars high in the heavens, and sometimes it falls to the depths of the nether regions.
ਲੋਭੀ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੨॥

लोभी जीअड़ा थिरु न रहतु है चारे कुंडा भाले ॥२॥
Lobẖī jīaṛā thir na rahaṯ hai cẖārė kundā bẖālė. ||2||
The greedy soul does not remain stable; it searches in the four directions. ||2||
ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਹਿ ਮਾਈ ॥
मरणु लिखाइ मंडल महि आए जीवणु साजहि माई ॥
Maraṇ likẖāė mandal meh āė jīvaṇ sājeh māī.
With death pre-ordained, the soul comes into the world, gathering the riches of life.
ਏਕਿ ਚਲੇ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭਾਹਿ ਬਲੰਤੀ ਆਈ ॥੩॥
एकि चले हम देखह सुआमी भाहि बलंती आई ॥३॥
Ėk cẖalė ham ḏėkẖah suāmī bẖāhi balanṯī āī. ||3||
I see that some have already gone, O my Lord and Master; the burning fire is coming closer! ||3||
ਨ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਭਾਈ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਈ ॥

न किसी का मीतु न किसी का भाई ना किसै बापु न माई ॥
Na kisī kā mīṯ na kisī kā bẖāī nā kisai bāp na māī.
No one has any friend, and no one has any brother; no one has any father or mother.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥
प्रणवति नानक जे तू देवहि अंते होइ सखाई ॥४॥१॥
Paraṇvaṯ Nānak jė ṯū ḏėveh anṯė hoė sakẖāī. ||4||1||
Prays Nanak, if You bless me with Your Name, it shall be my help and support in the end. ||4||1||
