From raag Maagh, Ang 116, Guru Amar Das Dev ji speaks about purity, the Guru's seva, God's presence and His forgiveness, the attainment of higher consciousness, and mukhti.

A little background for Guru Amar Das

...His brother Manak Chand lived nearby his house, Manak Chand's wife Bibi Amro use to sing Guru Nanak's hymns. Bhai Amar Das (Later Guru) must have heard her singing many times before. He engquired whose hymns she was singing and immediately made up his mind to call on Guru Angad. It was in 1541, when Amardas was 62 years old. Guru Amardas ji were on Guruship from 1552 to 1574, he moved to Goindwal from Khadur to avoid conflict with Guru Angad's son's., elder of whom named Datu had declared himself as a Guru.

...
As an anti-caste and anti-pollution measure, he made it incumbent that no one, irrespective of his status or caste, could see him unless he had first partaken, along with others, of the food cooked at the common kitchen. Emperor Akbar had also to dine at the langar before he met the Guru.

In his time, ascetics and recluses again made an attempt to enter the Guru's flock. But the Guru issued a final injunction that no recluse or ascetic could be a Sikh. He also denounced the system of sati and of purdah among women.

According to the Guru, the human body was the temple of God. He, therefore, laid emphasis on keeping it healthy and sound to the end. For the same reason, he denounced the ascetic practices of torturing the body. The Guru felt that the health of the body could not be divorced from moral and spiritual well-being.

Re: Without The Guru There is Pitch Darkness

pk70 ji

It is interesting how Guru's Shabad aligns darkness with distress. Another reminder how we are children and He is the parent. Some of us remember when we were very small being terrified of the darkness at night, thinking monsters were under the bed and in the closet. And a loving parent would come to quiet us down, open the closet door to see if there really was a monster there.

So we have Waheguru to calm our nerves always -- no matter what the circumstances. I think of those Sikh soldiers in Europe during the second World War marching through battlefields of the dead and camping at night without knowing what the light would bring. And they sang kirtaan in their shelters and foxholes.

Re: Without The Guru There is Pitch Darkness

Guru Naanak is telling us in Sri Raag that the Word of the Shabad brings peace and ends suffering. It is the best covering for the soul. Through the shabad the Lord prepares us to receive the seed of his wisdom and virtue. In giving up self-will we overcome our blindness to His grace. The darkness ends. Coming and going ends.

Re: Without The Guru There is Pitch Darkness

pk70 ji,

This part is very beautiful,

Jin ka*o bẖāʼndai bẖā*o ṯinā savārasī.
They, within whose vessel (mind) is the Lord's love; them the Lord regenerates.

Sūkẖī karai pasā*o ḏūkẖ visārasī.
He gives them the gift of peace and makes them forget distress.

Sahsā mūlė nāhi sarpar ṯārsī. ||1||
There is absolutely no doubt, that He will assuredly save them.

I found myself wondering about the reasons and causes of cruelty today. And found Guruji's answer about an hour ago. Cruelty springs from anger and attachment. It is self-plundering says Guruji. It is intoxicating and loses us in darkness.

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

Har bẖaj ān karam bikār.
Meditate, vibrate on the Lord; other actions are corrupt.

Mān moh na bujẖaṯ ṯarisnā kāl garas sansār. ||1|| rahā*o.
Pride, attachment and desire are not quenched; the world is in the grip of death. ||1||Pause||

Eating, drinking, laughing and sleeping, life passes uselessly.

Narak uḏar bẖarmanṯ jalṯo jameh kīnī sār. ||1||
The mortal wanders in reincarnation, burning in the hellish environment of the womb; in the end, he is destroyed by death. ||1||

He practices fraud, cruelty and slander against others; he sins, and washes his hands.

Binā saṯgur būjẖ nāhī ṯam moh mahāʼn anḏẖār. ||2||
Without the True Guru, he has no understanding; he is lost in the utter darkness of anger and attachment. ||2||

Bikẖ ṯẖag*urī kẖā*ė mūṯẖo cẖiṯ na sirjanhār.
He takes the intoxicating drugs of cruelty and corruption, and is plundered. He is not conscious of the Creator Lord God.

Gobinḏ gupaṯ ho*ė rahi*o ni*āro māṯang maṯ ahaʼnkār. ||3||
The Lord of the Universe is hidden and unattached. The mortal is like a wild elephant, intoxicated with the wine of egotism. ||3||

Kar kirpā parabẖ sanṯ rākẖė cẖaran kamal aḏẖār.
In His Mercy, God saves His Saints; they have the Support of His Lotus Feet.
