General Hari Singh Nalwa

General Hari Singh Nalwa was one of the greatest Sikh Generals. Like Napolean he personally led his Sikh troops into battle. Like Napolean he evoked intense loyalty and admiration. Remnants of this intense loyalty persist to this day. Nalwa is best known as the General who spear-headed the Sikh invasion of Afganistan.

This picture by unknown artist Allenwalla (vernacular: Allen fellow) realistically depicts the battle hardened Nalwa Sahib, circa 1812.

In accordance with the Sikh faith, Nalwa feared no one and had enmity towards none. A true Sikh hero, he treated the poor and dispossessed with love and compassion without regard to their creed or color. Captured prisoners were treated with dignity and humanity, a Sikh warrior tradition.

General Hari Singh Nalwa can be termed as the greatest General of all times . He managed to defeat an army of fierce Pathans & keep control of the area . It is to be noted that till today neither the British , nor Russians & now Americans will be able to take control of the area or defeat the battle hardened Pathans .

Hari was a teenager when he killed a tiger. Maharaja Ranjit Singh watched this, and adorned him the title 'Nalua' or 'Nalwa' which means Tiger hunter. He took control in important territories like Peshawar, Kabul, Kandhar which are never taken over by anyone in history except sikhs. History talks about a Afghani mother putting the child to sleep by saying - Go to sleep my dear, or else Nalwa will come over.

There used to be a Amar Chitra Katha publication about General Hari Singh Nalwa, which I read countless times, and his fierceness, kindness and purity are a great inspiration.

I think we should find more articles about him to learn more about his deeds during his life. He is considered a man tall both in height and deeds.
