FIRST TIME EVER! The debut of the very first young filmmaker's competition for Sikh Youth (up to age 25) is designed to encourage and inspire our youth to get involved in media and film and use their creativity to produce interesting and educational pieces designed to spread the spirit of Sikhi. Most people in the world don't know who Sikhs are or what we are all about, so we conceived this event to publicize the experience of Sikhi and Sikh identity and give people insight into our spirit, values and culture.

Our hope is that this educational and fun event will allow people to get involved in the world of film and media and continue to use it for the benefit of the Sikh community.

We are looking for videos that come out of the entrants' own personal experiences and that move and inspire the viewer. We will be offering cash prizes to help motivate contestants to put their time and effort into creating something of value.

We invite Sikh Youth all over the world to participate. Do you have access to a computer... and and some type of camera? Well now's the time! Make a video and submit it. You do not need to have had any prior experience in filmmaking. It's like a "Sikh essay contest" but you will use multimedia to convey your message. It's a great summer project and a chance to do something different and learn something new. Learn more and get help getting started.

Entries received prior to July 14th 2006, will be submitted for consideration as part of the 4th Annual Spinning Wheel Film Festival lineup, to be held in Toronto, Canada - Sept 29th - Oct 1st. Official SikhNet deadline for Youth Film Festival Competition is August 31st, 2006.

Ok…so I guess no one guessed the news from yesterday’s picture/hint.

Today I would like to let you all know about a cool new project that SikhNet is hosting. This all new Youth Online Film Festival came about as a result of seeing the power of low-tech videos that are now spreading around online. You don’t need to go to film school or have a $100,000 budget to make a short video. Just some creativity and a willingness to learn.

Essay competitions are so Old School! Computers and technology are so much a part of most of our everyday lives that is only seems natural to try to have a challenge for the youth that is high tech and up with the times. We are going to be featuring the video submissions on SikhNet as they come in for all to watch, and then after the Aug, 31st deadline we will announce the competition winners (cash prizes). Some of these videos may also be shown at upcoming Spinning Wheel Film Festivals in Toronto, Canada and California.
My hope is that youth all over will take this opportunity to try something new and use their creativity to communicate a message related to being a Sikh. A 3-10 minute video can have a huge impact, but you’ll never know till you try and ‘give yourself a voice’.
