Assaults and other crimes directed against Sikhs have declined in the years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, but incidents of vandalism and verbal harassment continue to plague members of the religious group, local Sikhs and law enforcement officials said Wednesday.
At the first of two statewide hearings, residents offered several solutions to combat hate crimes against Sikhs: Require law enforcement agents to undergo training on how to recognize and investigate hate crimes, and encourage schools to incorporate lessons on religious freedom.
