The Sant Samaj, headed by Baba Sarbjot Singh Bedi, Damdami Taksal, led by Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, and representatives of about 150 Panthic organisations, including two former jathedars of Akal Takht, today rejected the Nanakshahi Calendar approved by both SGPC and Akal Takht.

The resolution rejecting the Nanakshahi Calendar has come as a big setback for the SGPC and Akal Takht even as two outside takhts, including Hazoor Sahib and Patna Sahib, have already been observing and celebrating Sikh gurpurbs as per the traditional Bikrami calendar. The attempt to make the Nanaksahi Calendar — the first Sikh calendar stand severely suffered.

The Sikh conclave, held at the Damdami Taksal here, rejected the proposed move of the SGPC to allow women to participate in the ‘Amrit Sanchar’ ceremonies, seva of carrying ‘Palki” from Akal Takht to Harmander Sahib and vice versa, allowing baptised Sikh women to perform kirtan and the cleaning of sanctum sanctorum of Harmander Sahib.

The Sikh conclave decided to launch ‘chetna march’ from tomorrow with a view to ‘restoring’ the age old Sikh Maryada in Harmander Sahib and Akal Takht. The district-wise jathas would be reaching Akal Takht regularly for 21 days

why can't we all just get along

Dear Khalsa Ji,

It is important for us to know why have they rejected it. What ever is their basis or rational we must know. Some one who is in Amritsar can find this out from Taxal and post it on this site for the benifit of all of us.

Looks like we are the stage Christianity was in 1500's. These Sant Samajists are the Backward, Traditionists, "Catholics" and the rest of the Moderates Forward Looking Liberal Sikhs will be the "Protestants".

Both sides are sticking to their GUNS..and there is no compromise. The SS have NEVER accepted the AKAL TAKHAT MARYADA of the Panth since it was introduced more than 75 years ago...this is their STRONGEST ASSAULT yet on this..( after their FAILED SS Maryada attempt/cum SGPC Elections Fight about ten years ago)

The Akal takhat shoudlnt be involved at all since the MARYADA that it passed 75 years ago is VALID.

Moderate Sikhs Worldwide should RESIST this authoritarian lynch mob tactics of the SS Male chavanists..and make them a failure as the Punjab Sikhs did ten years ago when the BABAS dreamed of SGPC Presidency.

Catholics are more like AKJ

And protestants are refomers like Sirdar Sahib Kala Afghana.

Das was initial against the solar calender as in past both Solar(Nanak Shahi with Sankrands and Vaishakhi) And Luner Calneder(Vikrami) were used.

But due to articles in Panchjanya of RSS opposing NanakShahi Calnedr by S. Purewal made Das support the NanakShahi Calender in Present as who on erath were RSS people to interfere in our internal affairs.

So far in SGPC and thier things in mainstreeam Das support the Soler Calnedr of Nanak Shahi which is recently introdued.

Well they are much more better preachers then our protestant Sikhs.

Guru Maharaj Used the festivals of Holi,Devali and even Dushera to wean away Hindus from idolatory and to preach Sikhism to them.

Later on Mahants may even have made used of Kartik Purnimah to be used as Gurpurab of First Master to let Hindu do not go to Brahmins and be our Part.

In fact most of the history writtan in old texts talks about Vikrami Era or Calender and dates are based upon it.

Yet Sikhs do not have to rely upon Barhimins for Alamanac as Mahants have thier own command on that.

With Nanak Shahi Calander Missionaiers have also dislodge the Sants from this field.

What Das knows about Sikhsim day is not at all important to us like Grah Natckshtras or Zodiac etc or Rashi or Palentory positions and events on Gurparbs are morte to inspire us be it on that day or after 100 days from that day.Punya or Mahttam(Gaining of virtue in heavan) due to doing something at one particular day is to be found in Islam or Hinduism but is Anti Sikhism.

Needless to say that Saka and Vikrarmi Calenders as per Indian Govt are also been made soler and scintific and as it happens in Iran that Hizri the Islamic one and the Kursheed or solor one of that Countary both are used.

So das can recomned that if someone wants to use old calneder we must not feel Bad but yet Nanak Shahi Calender is something welcoming yet Hola Mahla or Bandi Choor Divas etc and local customs of Sants need to be respected.
