Indian authorities clamped curfew in the northern Indian industrial town of Ludhiana in Punjab state Sunday, following the clashes between Sikh protesters and police, Indian official broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) reported.

On Saturday one person was killed and 15 others were injured when police opened fire and lobbed tear smoke shells to quell the Sikh protesters who tried to disrupt the satsang (religious discourse) of a sectarian leader Ashutosh Maharaj of Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan.

The protests and clashes broke out amid allegations by protesters that Ashutosh Maharaj was making statements against Sikh religion and its Gurus.

Following the clashes the organizers decided to cancel the religious discourse scheduled for Sunday.

Paramilitary forces and police have been deployed in the city. Authorities have asked people to remain indoors.

According to AIR, only the persons with valid passes will be allowed to move in the city.

The state's chief minister has appealed the people to maintain peace and government has ordered a probe into the death of the protester. ***
