A fire hit the Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha community centre in Burnaby early Tuesday, followed by another blaze that destroyed an abandoned house a couple blocks away. Both incidents are being treated as suspicious.

Followed few hours later by another suspicious blaze two blocks away

Burnaby Fire Department and Burnaby RCMP are investigating two suspicious fires blocks apart on Gilley Avenue early Tuesday morning.

Just before 2 a.m., two resident priests at the Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha community centre at 7271 Gilley Ave. discovered the fire and called 911, said assistant fire chief administration Tom Foreman.

The fire had started outside by the loading dock before spreading to the roof and inside to the kitchen area, Foreman said. The blaze destroyed one of the Sikh temple's parade floats which was parked out back.

In all, seven fire trucks and 18 firefighters responded to the fire, which took about two hours to put out. Foreman estimated damage at "upwards of $100,000." There were no injuries.

The incident was deemed suspicious and is being investigated by both the fire department and Burnaby RCMP.

Fire and police investigators are also looking into another suspicious fire a few hours later just a couple blocks away.

Firefighters were called to an abandoned house at 7412 Gilley Ave. at 6 a.m. Six fire trucks responded to the incident, which destroyed the home, Foreman said. There were no injuries.
