Rugby has appointed its first Sikh Mayor; this prodigious honour goes to Kam Kaur, mother of four.

Kam Kaur, was born in Coventry in 1969, attended Bremond College and Butts College in Coventry.

She married Bal in 1990, an arranged marriage, the couple moved to Rugby in the early 1990s

Bal’s father, Gurbax Singh was a passionate politician from an early age, he exported his enthusiasm for politics with him when he came to Britain, today his daughter-in-law has driven his zeal by becoming Mayor of Rugby

Gurbax Singh has many accreditations to his name along with meeting the Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher

The couple have four children, Harjinder, aged 25, who runs his own business, Av, aged 17 and Harpreet, aged 14, who both attend Princethorpe College and Sharon, aged nine, who attends Bilton Junior School in Rugby.

Bal is a company director and runs Brown And Cockerill Estate Agents in Bilton, Rugby while Kam runs a successful clothing store, Label Outlet on the outskirts of the town.

As a Conservative councillor for the Overslade ward since 2002, Kam was inspired to enter politics by her father-in-law, Gurbax Singh

Kam said: "It's a great honour to be the first citizen of Rugby and I'm looking forward to me year in office. Hopefully I will be able to fulfil the role and keep up with the high expectations that come with being the Mayor."

“We would like to congratulate Kam Kaur on her achievements, as Mayor of Rugby we are confident she will serve the communities well as first citizen” said Jaspal Singh Bains, Chairman of Eastern Media Group.

“There is a need for more Asian women and indeed Sikh women to enter the world of Politics”.

Is there some error while publishing his elder son's age.She is barely 40 and married in 1990 then how could her elder son's is 25 years old.It means her first son is born when she was 15
