Sikhs who fled China after World War II with Chinese wives and families migrated to Indonesia and Malaysia. There were 5 gurdwaras in Shanghai with the last one closing around 1956. The Sikhs in China originally were police officers who retired there after serving in the British colonial army. It is interesting . There is more information about them on the net. Let me see if I can dig some of it up. I read one story about one of the last groups to leave mainland China on a large boat headed for Malaysia, with families and possessions, leaving an incredible immigrant story behind. In China the Sikhs were very prosperous and they were considered to be of high status because of their military positions and positions of trust in the Chinese cities. |
