Mission roots brings Assamese Sikhs to Punjab (The Times of India)

In 1820, when Maharaja Ranjit Singh sent around 500 Sikh soldiers to Assam to help the Ahom tribe fight Burmese invaders, most had died in the battle of Hadirachaki.

Interesting. As a Sikh from a Panjabi background I am somewhat surprised to hear of all these communities. Firstly Afghans, then Malaysian and now Assamese Sikhs. Of course there are also American Sikhs.

It is interesting . There is more information about them on the net. Let me see if I can dig some of it up. I read one story about one of the last groups to leave mainland China on a large boat headed for Malaysia, with families and possessions, leaving an incredible immigrant story behind. In China the Sikhs were very prosperous and they were considered to be of high status because of their military positions and positions of trust in the Chinese cities.
