| | | | | Fake braveheart Vivek Mishra proves to be chicken hearted Chandigarh: The cop who was so brave that he killed many a militant in fake encounters finally proved that he was no braveheart. He could not even withstand the professional pressures of the lack of a promotion. Vivek Mishra (42), one of the high profile officers of the Punjab police, shot himself in the temple with his licensed pistol at his official residence in Sector 39 here in the wee hours of Sunday. Mishra was posted with Punjab police as assistant inspector general (AIG) in the armament section of provisioning department.
His friends and colleagues have confirmed that he was in an inebriated condition on Saturday night and was under extreme “depression”. His boss IG Sanjiv Gupta also confirmed that Mishra was disturbed, but I never expected that he would kill himself. It may be mentioned that his name figured in the fake encounters and he was chargesheeted by CBI for the same in a Patiala court. It was expected that the stay on his cases was about to be vacated. This seemed to be bothering Mishra, said a friend. He added that the ongoing tough stand on cops nationally in fake encounter cases was playing on his mind, said one of his colleagues. Mishra, along with 27 others, was facing trial in the Patiala CBI court where the court was examining his role in the Pul ******i (Gurdaspur) fake encounter case. One of the 27 has already died.
Mishra was rushed to PGI after he shot himself, only to be declared brought dead.
Mishra was a key men of former DGP KPS Gill, and was handpicked by him in 1993 for what was called "fighting terrorism in the state", which basically meant bumping off people in fake encounters. He was given the post of SP (operations) at Gurdaspur and had led the team to kill four militants. A 1989 batch CRPF officer, he was absorbed in the Punjab police only last year.
In 1998, Ajit Singh Sandhu, a senior police officer, killed himself by jumping in front of a train. His name figured in fake encounters. DSP Ashok Kumar, died of heart attack due to depression a few years back. His name cropped up in the Khalra case.
Swatantarpal Singh Basra, the Commandant at 9 Battalion IRB at Amritsar, who also had a similar past is now also feeling depressed. “After Vivek’s death, I too believe that it would be my end as well,” he said.
In Punjab, 25 PPS officers, 50 NGOs, 200 constabularies are facing trials in these fake encounters at the special CBI court in Patiala. Interestingly, till date no IPS officer is facing any inquiry in this, a sign of the poor regard the government has about officer's respect for human rights. Two IPS officers — Sanjiv Gupta and Sumedh Singh Saini — had been accused of the same, but Gupta was discharged and Saini’s case later became a family rivalry. The fact that they are facing trials and that no IPS has come to their rescue is playing on their minds.
Mishra was not alone, along with him, eight CRPF and one BSF officers — who were absorbed by the last Amarinder Singh government are complaining of depression these days.
Interestingly, Vivek Mishra was personal security officer during Parkash Singh Badal's last tenure as CM. Badal has specially handpicked Saini during his latest regime to head the high profile Vigilance Bureau.
