The first Sikh Guru Nanak Dev still owns over 1800 acres
in Nankana Sahib district Pakistan.

According to the revenue records of the district, Rai Bular Khan, who owned over 3600 acres, had donated half of it to Hazrat Nanak Dev in late 15th century when Guru Nanak was just a teenager and has been in his name since then.

These are the findings of Dr Harpal Singh Pannu, head of the Sikh Religious Studies in the Punjabi University, Patiala, who has in his book, ‘Gautam to Taski’, sought to establish that the said land had been in illegal possession of the progenies of Rai Bular Khan.

Pannu said the subsequent generations, who had been in possession of the land, filed a court case also in 80s to acquire legal ownership. “But the Pakistan Supreme Court ruled against it in 1991 and upheld the ownership of Guru Nanak of the land”, Pannu said.

He said the historic Nankana Sahib gurdwara was located on part of this land of which the major chunk had been under illegal possession of the Khan family.

Pakistan, incidentally has proposed to set up the Sikh University on this land.

In his book Pannu said the land was donated to Guru Nanak after one his desires to have a son was fulfilled with the blessings of the first Sikh guru.

He said he would visit Pakistan shortly to procure the legal documents and submit them to the SGPC for further action.

He contended that the land should be legally transferred to the name of Guru Granthi Sahib, which has been recognised as a living Guru and successor of the first Sikh guru.
