Preneet Kaur takes oath as MoS in Manmohan Singh cabinet

PATIALA: Preneet Kaur, who has proved her mettle by scoring hat-trick of victories from Patiala, has inducted in Union Council of Ministers today.
She was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999 from Patiala, to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004 and to the 15th Lok Sabha in 2009.

Born on October 3, 1944 Parneet is the daughter of former Punjab Chief Secretary Gian Singh Kahlon, and wife of former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh.
Belonging to the erstwhile princely state of Patiala, Preneet, as she is popularly known as ‘Maharani’, won her third successive election from the Patiala Lok Sabha constituency defeating SAD stalwart Prem Singh Chandumajra. Being the wife of Capt Singh and daughter-in-law of Mohinder Kaur, a former MP was enough to get her into the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1999.
Though during her young days she came into contact with powerful political leaders who used to visit her father, she had stayed away from politics. Even after her marriage into Patiala royalty in 1964, she rarely took any interest in active politics though she became a known face to the public as she extensively canvassed for her husband who contested the Lok Sabha polls in 1977 and then again in 1980.
It was only when her husband rejoined the Congress in 1998 and became the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) that she was made to take a plunge into active politics to contest from Patiala in 1999 in his place.

In her very first elections, Preneet struck a chord with the rural populace, especially womenfolk and recorded an impressive victory. In 2004, she was re-elected though by a narrow margin. Educated at St Bedes College and Convent of Jesus and Mary College, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, she is BA and holds a Teachers Training Certificate as well. Apart from politics, children’s' issues, education and social welfare are her areas of interest.
